How many tabs do you have open on a regular working day?

@ bookmarks - if you use firefox or chrome if you type the keywords of what you're looking for in your url bar, they will appear in the drop-down. i dont give a fuck about organizing them at all anymore since i'll always find what i'm looking for right away. it works better in ff than chrome for me but, ff crashes too much so i'm using chrome now. had to install everymark extension for chrome since chrome only shows you 6 results in the drop-down

yeah I think we all need an explanation from -joe-... how the fuck do you manage 200 son?

You don't. You are full of bullshit if you have 200 tabs open, because by that point you are not relating to anything early on in your tabs.

20-30, OK possibility. More than that you are a tab hoarder. You can not tell me you are using those tabs for anything productive. Get real.

When I thought I was going crazy with 30+ tabs, there are those of you who go up to 100+ tabs. That's hella lot and how do you manage to find the correct tab?
Everything's generally grouped fairly together, so it's not too hard to find with the dropdown. I miss firefox 1.5 though, before they made the tabs go off your screen :(

I'll often come back to tabs later, even if I'm not using them at the moment.

My current tabs:

  • 3 long wikipedia pages I'm reading when I need a break. (not IM related, just stuff I find interesting)
  • A few interesting torrents I'm going to download when I go to my mum's house (they're 70Gb, and my internet here can't handle that)
  • About 10 wickedfire tabs
  • 5 GFY tabs
  • 20 Namepros tabs (mostly the marketplace)
  • A couple of Paypal windows
  • 5 pages related to a festival I was considering going to, found out it's sold out now (ok, I'm probably not gonna look at those)
  • 15 tabs for keyword research
  • A few to check what details I have to give for pushing a domain with Godaddy (ok, again, I probably wont look at those)
  • 3 to check out something SEO related.
  • 1 for youtube to listen to a song
  • 1 for amazon to see if they have the album
  • and 5 for plentyoffish ads/abovealloffers.
I'd say a good number of those I'll come back to.

100% honest question here... why the fuck do you guys need so many tabs open? Seriously, I can't have more than 3-4 open at a time without things feeling cluttered and unorganized. I use bookmarks and have then organized in a very specific way. I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would need so many open tabs...

For me out of sight is out of mind.

Would you mind giving a quick rundown of how your bookmarks are so thoroughly organized? I've reorganized mine so many times over the years, and I'm just never quite satisfied. I find it nearly impossible to categorize them properly thus ending up getting frustrated at some point when I'm no longer sure what sites should go into which folders because there are so many. Usually when that happens, I backup all my bookmarks and start fresh because I can no longer find anything in there and hurts to even look.

I have less than 500 sites bookmarked, so it's not that hard to find things... but this is mainly how I have things set up.

1. Any website that I have an account/password with doesn't even get bookmarked. I manage all of those sites with KeePassX. I have those organized in a very simple way. Work, servers, billing accounts, forums, email, etc.

2. Sites that don't require accounts are bookmarked and tagged in a branching style... Technology > Linux > CentOS > Apache... And most times I don't even need to worry about that, because the tag search works fine.

3. Sites that are temporary and I just want to come back to later that day/week go into Read Later Fast.

5-7. I get annoyed when I have to use the scroll feature on FF to see all the other tabs I have open. Makes me feel like I have OCD.

A tip for those of you running Firefox... As 5.0, there is no need to open a new browser window if you want to separate tabs. Just press Ctrl + Shift + E and you can manage "tab groups". Drag a window from the main tab group into the gray area of that Ctrl+Shift+E screen and it will create a new group. Just as good as having new windows but without actually having multiple windows.

It used to be control+space, I would recommend you switch the shortcut to it, it is much easier to use. ctrl+shift+e is a bit of a chore to do. But it's great, going to look into tmt, but it's one of the main reasons why I can't use chrome.

Never more than 5-10 tabs in FF. Would have more open but I cant get used to chrome and besides I have a toolbar in FF that checks 10 email addresses(doesnt work on chrome)
Most of the times I bookmark everything.

Like.. 4?

I don't get the need for having 10s open at a time, would just make me feel overwhelmed personally. I can't imagine someone reading a magazine then suddenly thinking "bored now" and putting it down in front of them still open, and then opening another, then maybe a book, and a brochure, then a catalogue, until they're completely immersed in things to read before putting them away.

Current tab count...17 tabs in 3 firefox windows...and I frequently double that.

But it's all very organized. I like to work one job per window, using as many tabs as needed in that window because it does not close until the job is finished (or I'm happy with the progress made in it). For example, if I was writing a new blog post, I would have everything I need to research and write it open in that one window - keyword tools if needed, older posts, forums, other sites, my PRL articles source, my source of photo's, affil link details, my backlink builder and so on.

It can get a little carried away at times - like when I'm looking for something new tp promote & have 4 different sales pages open trying to find the "perfect" product and/or I'm inside the membership site I use for PLR articles and have 5+ different articles open trying to find one that isn't fluffed up bullsh*! - but overall, one window per job works for me.

I find it motivates me to hurry the hell up because until I finish what I'm working on, that window stays where I can see it. Then I can go and check out what's happening in other windows. I have one dedicated to email accounts, one for playing in (Facebook, my personal email account, games, the kids stuff...) and usually 3ish jobs waiting in their own windows for me at any given time.

I currently have 44 open in firefox. I use them more like bookmarks than pages I'm actively browsing. Linux also handles multiple firefox tabs better than windows.
