Why working from home is both awesome and horrible...

I got an awesome deal on leasing some unused office space in the 2nd floor of the gym at my apartment complex - 175 square feet for $175/month. Not only is it dirt cheap but they pay electricity and there's free wireless internet. My apartment is about 100 yards away so I usually eat lunch at home and there's no commute so huge savings there too.

I certainly don't think its a necessity. Forcing discipline upon yourself is a good thing to learn. But for me, there's a huge psychological benefit to having to get dressed and walking to the office because it means "I'm going to work" and that puts me in a productive mindset. Plus seeing women on treadmills and at the pool isn't a bad way to start the day.

That's pretty awesome.

I love the oatmeal.

+1

Been working at home for over 5 years.

I get plenty of social interaction from my neighbors, if screaming at them and their children to stay off my lawn (whether they are on it or not) counts as interaction.

What a lucky bastard!

For that setup I'd do it in a heartbeat too... Although I'd probably consider it more of an extenstion of my current address than a separate office...

LOL, from calling the guy a retard to lucky bastard in 2 forum posts.

I've been working from home for 7 or 8 years. Probably about to have kids and at that point I will need more house or an office.

1. I called no one a retard in this whole thread.

2. His circumstances are extremely rare. I was talking about the typical office space where you pay upwards of $1500 a month plus utils to be able to drive somewhere through traffic to use when you could just walk down your hallway.

What he found was basically an attached room to his own apartment for only $175 month and no utils. I mean wow, that's like winning the lotto in my book!

Awesome set up, I have seen deals like that by me just not that close. And I definitely agree about the psychological benefit.

I'm fully aware of how lucky I was to find the deal I have. I saw it as a very long shot when I asked the property manager if they had any unused office space available. The moral of the story is "you miss 100% of the shots you never take."

When she said "the lowest we can lease it for is $175/month" it was pretty hard to keep a straight face, pause and say "...I suppose that's fair."

dude that is a great price/deal !

;P

It gets easier once you are earning the money.
If you work hard you will usually use the first 3-6 months to actually do hard work, after your are able to go around and try and be social because you should have something started that needs a small amount of attention. Unless your a workaholic..........

Then....

about 90% of this can be solved by renting an office and doing your work that way. Productivity will go up as well when you see others busting thier ass you will want to work harder.

in terms of social life you can't be serious. that's an easy fix
