How much money do you put aside for car and rent?

I agree with the 'Bob' lifestyle. In fact, he reminds me of myself! One day, I may have kids, but I've learn't to live within my means. I could buy a fast car, but I get bored of them very quickly. I'd much rather spend time with people I love.

So, the advice I'd give to the OP is not to buy (or rent) things (luxuries) that you really don't need. Do you really need an Audi, when a Ford or Toyota can do the same job?

Good luck, whatever you decide.

So the moral of that story is don't have kids?
Don't be so naive. As many people here can attest to, a child often brings more happiness then anything else could. The moral of his analogy is that your quality of life can drastically be reduced if you over-leverage yourself and extend your credit beyond your income.

It was obviously a joke but you couldn't get.

The analogy was stupid. All things equal, of course having kids is much more expensive than not having kids. Especially if you are putting them through private school + paying for their college education. It would have been better to compare 2 people with similar family situations.

Put away as MUCH as possible. I spend about 5% of what I make each month on all my bills in total. Could I go spend a ton? Yep. Do I? No. Why? Because I want to be financially independent. I don't and won't ever work a corporate job again.

A lot of good, solid and responsible advice in here.

Personally, I have to keep reinvesting into something new, whether it be developing new sites or otherwise.

Let's say I have 100k in the bank. I wouldn't be able to let it sit there; I'd be investing at least 50-75k of it back into new projects. That might be new sites, media buys, or whatever. Maybe something offline.

Having money in the bank is great, and it's what distinguishes the peasants from the princes, but I always need to be striving to create more income, even if the risk seems fairly unreasonable or downright stupid. Building up something from nothing is what I really enjoy, and I'm willing to take a lot more risks than most people.

As long as I can eat and have a roof over my head, I'm happy. But what really makes me happy is developing sites and other business', even if it's not very responsible.

I'll keep doing until I hit it big.

Yeah, the chances of me being another broke IMer in the alley with a heroine needle sticking out of his arm is high, but I can't just sit around staring at my bank account, as dumb as that sounds.

Awesome thread guys.

Personally, I'm saving 90% pre-tax income but I'm going to be investing most if not all of that into a new venture. The stakes are high, but the reward outweighs the risks. And fuck guys, what am I supposed to do with all of the money. I live like a baller in college on my 10% lmao.

So where's the boobs? I'm debt free with an offline job. No mortgage just land rates and bought my VW Caddy van outright so no repayments. When I budgeted as a single bloke for living expenses I would allow up to 30% of earnings and bank the rest.

I don't have a car payment because I hate making payments on liabilities.
Exactly, it's a depreciating asset. Worth less the second you drive off the lot and has nowhere to go but down. Unfortunately for their wallets, many guys are trying to compensate for the lemon they were sold at birth that's parked in their Hanes underwear, lol.

So how do you guys without transport get around or don't you? Freedom 4 me is having the ability to get up and go where I want, when I want without having to bludge a lift, rely on public transport (fuck that) or walk (fuck that more). Those that can afford their own wheels have them and still save plenty. Furniture also depreciates, have any of that? Being self employed and registering my vehicle 4 business gives me a good tax break as well as running costs.

I actually like walking, so I walk most places even if it takes 45 minutes each way or so. If not, I'll take public transportation (not ideal, but not horrible), or cabs occasionally. If I didn't enjoy walking I'd buy a cheap and dependable car, but that's not the case.

If you have to ask, you really haven't thought about it. However no more than a quarter after taxes.

Bob other makes about £100,000 a year. He has no kids, lives in a flat in London (worth about £250,000. Mortgaged, but he's about to pay it off completely). He has no unsecured debt, and owns two investment properties. He drives a £2,000 Rover, paid for in cash. He cooks his own food at home most days, but dines out occasionally.

(Bob's reaction when he saw Adam's new BMW was to smile and say to me "I don't need an 80K car to feel good about myself")

Both love what they do, but Adam works about 60 hours a week. His health is shot to shit, and he doesn't see his kids very often. He only goes on holiday for about 1-2 weeks a year, because he has to keep the income in to keep the lights on.

Bob works about 30 hours a week. He spends 2-3 months a year travelling, during which he doesn't work.

Neither of these friends are yet at the stage where they're financially independent, but Bob will get there very soon. Adam certainly won't until his kids have left college, and probably not for a long while after that unless he kicks his high spending habit.

Are you Bob?
PS: Where does work? or does he work for himself.
100K GBP for 30 hour weeks, with 3 months of Vacation?
Sounds like a great career, unless he is into IM..

I am satisfied with my income, but not my hour. I have to try to bring down my hours to his levels once I have Kids.
