Help! Laptop battery loses all energy within 1 minute

Hello,

For the last 2 days, as soon as I unplug my laptop, my battery dies within 1 minute.

I also get weird readings as I check how much energy is left. For example:

9 mins (97% remaining)
8 mins (94% remaining)
8 mins (88% remaining)

... and then it dies immediately.

97% remaining should be at least 1 hour and 30 mins in "power saver" mode - not 9 mins.

Any idea what may be going on?

If it's a battery issue, I'll get a new one - but I'm not sure if something else may be going on (why all the weird readings for example)?

It's probably a battery issue. Only way to check would be to get a friend with the same model to replace with his battery.. But a mistake a lot of people make is leavingin their computer plugged in forever, and not letting their battery drain.
 
Most people buy new batteries when theirs stops working. This should fix your problem 100% of the time.
 
This is the computer advice I hate giving more than anything but once you decide definitively that you're going to buy a new battery no matter what and don't care what happens to your old battery:
1. Charge your battery to 25% or less but not less than 1%
2. put it in several zip lock bags and wrap it in seran wrap.
3. put it in the freezer for 4 hours.
4. Remove and let it sit till it comes back to room temperature (for the love of god don't try to heat it up with a hair dryer or anything).
5. Stick it in the computer and let it charge as far as it will go.
repeat once if necessary

Edit: if you pull your battery out and find it damp (you fucked up sealing it) don't put it back in your laptop. Just throw it away :)
 
Dont listen to anyone, but take this advice.... When you use a laptop, NEVER have the battery in the laptop. Many people keep the battery in the laptop 247. Batteries should only be used when your not plugged in. By leaving the battery in for 6+ months, it drains the ability to keep power. I've had your problem happen, about 4 times in the past 5 years. So in summary, buy a new battery, and dont use it unless you need to.

So what about those ultraportables and tablets where the batteries are pretty much intergrated within the machine?
 
Not to say that some modern laptops don't have power running through them constantly, therefore making no difference, removed or not. Certainly the case on Macs that once charged the power no longer goes to the battery, but directly to the computer. I also believe my old Sony used to do that as well - allegedly.
 
You gonna have to buy a new battery. You can try and recalibrate your battery (google on how to do this), but it shouldnt help too much, maybe only a few more minutes at best.

Wowsers.. do you know how this works?! I may give it a go with my shitty battery... unless you're taking the mickey.

This is bullshit, it applies to early days of laptop batteries, things have changed a lot. Also like the other guy said how do you explain MacBooks and tablets with embedded batteries?

Yea basically this. Old batteries used to charge even if it was at 100%, but new batteries stop charging when it is 98% or 100% thus doesn't overchrage. Its probably due to new battery technology and new charging technology in general (like OS, adapters etc)
 
I've always been taught that to keep Lithium Ion batteries healthy you should completely discharge and recharge them once a month. I've been doing that since I got my first laptop and most of my batteries last about 4-5 years before they crap out completely. I have one here going on 10 years...still holds about a 50% charge.

Apparently you can the same with hard drives, when a hard drive fails you can bring it back to life for 30 minutes using this technique, enough time to plug in and copy your important files onto a safe drive. Though I prefer to backup all my computers onto my server which is on raid 5+1
