My SSD drive (OS drive) failed about a month ago and forced me to do a system restore from a backup that was done last year which deleted all the files on my desktop which are very important to me.

I have a regular 1TB harddrive that I use for major programs and storage, but stupidly I didn't make a backup of the important files on my desktop so now I'm trying to recover these files somehow.

Is there any way to undo the System restore or dig deeper to recover these files?

What I've done so far:
Checked all Users/Desktop folders
Can't boot into windows so used Ubuntu Live CD to search for files
Used programs like Recuva
Currently gave SSD to an uncle of mine that's pretty good with hardware and hoping he can recover this stuff for me.

Fuck SSD's - reason I bought it was because they are supposedly better than regular HD's, but with the high failure rate, it is not worth it.

I won't preach to you about how you should have had a backup - because after this incident, you will never forget to take one.

You can do a few things providing your "failure" was Software related. Was it reformatted? Download OnTrack Recovery Tools - see what they will dig up for you.

If that data is extremely important to you - I wouldn't fuck around and send it out to an expert. It's going to cost you a couple grand give or take...but as long as you didn't do a Gutmann wipe on the drive - they should be able to recover.

No, I didn't do a complete wipe, but a BSOD kept insisting I do a Restore so not sure what happened there.

Who was SSD manufacturer in your case ?

It is a Patriot 64GB Warp SSD

So currently it is just at a BSOD and nothing physically is wrong with the drive? What OS is it? Is the file system intact, did you try unplugging the drive or running a parallel install and seeing if you have access to your data?

No, it's currently getting a Boot Mgr not found error. Nothing is physically wrong with it, but it is obviously factory defective. It's on Windows 7.

I ran Ubuntu Live and saw only files from the system restore from last year (2010) and not the files I actually need.

Windows.old isn't there, they aren't in any users/folder either.

I did not reformat the drive, so it has to be there, just need to dig deeper than usual.

See if you can get your hands on a copy of OnTrack Recovery Tools - that software WILL find and mount your NTFS partition and get you the data.

Sorry to slightly hijack this, but for those of you who do automatic backups, which app do you use? I don't feel like setting up a raid, and would just like to take backups like daily/weekly/whatever on to another hdd

Why wouldn't you just use a raid? There's nothing to set up, plug two drives in and go. There's more to set up with configuring backup software.
