I was thinking about getting into martial arts. Was going to try Kenpo Karate and Krav Maga.

really want to focus on practical self defense and maybe later on something with competition/sparring.

anyone here take anything? and care to share some input on their experiences ?

I have done it on and off for 15 years or so.

For self defense, fighting ability
1: MMA
2: Judo
3: Muay Thai
4: Boxing
5: Being very fit and having the ability to control adrenaline IE: RMCAT courses and whatnot.

Whats gayer than Twilight? Kicking and punching the air.

If you want to get into something that is useful it will need to be one of the following:

- Kyokushin
- Muay Thai
- Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Kyokushin: This is the one Karate that stands out from the rest and is by far the most brutal. You will give and take about the same, but it's worth it.

Muay Thai: Great but your shins are not going to like you.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: Not something I'd take personally but most fights do end up on the ground so it makes sense.

I did MMA for a year and did karate from around 9 to 12. I really recommend muay Thai and bjj.

Did 1 year of Kung Fu & Chi Kung. Really good for both the body and the mind. I'm thinking of getting back to it soon...

I've been in a class similar to Krav for about 4 years now. I love it and continue to go once a week. I feel like I could beat most people up on the street. We have new students coming in all the time and every time we spar with them it's a joke because of how easy it is. I would recommend going for it, just make sure that you are actually sparring with other students and just wasting your time doing useless stuff. Great exercise too.

I'm thinking about doing some of that Jason Bourne stuff. Smacking people with newspapers and stuff, etc.

ohh your funny

I am near a place that teaches Kung Fu ( a more modern forum) will be sure to try that as well.

right Krav Maga is supposed to be the most practical to street fighting and self defense. they also teach you advanced techniques like how to defend against multiple attackers, attackers with knives, and attackers with guns etc.

and as you said great to keep in shape as well.

I've trained in Shotokan and Kyokushin Karate in the past and while Kyokushin training will unarguably turn you into a toughened mofo, you will still spend a LOT of time learning/practicing things virtually irrelevant to real life street fights.

If your focus is on "practical self defense" as you say, I would recommend Krav Maga (which isn't really a martial art) as you will spend all your time training techniques that will actually work, and not on kata or the jumping reverse roundhouse kick which will probably not help when someone grabs your shirt in a crowded bar.

I trained in Judo for a couple of months when I was 12, don't even know why I stopped, it's pretty useful because it teaches how to use opponents weight in your favor. Even now 9 years later I still can usually get opponents larger than me on the ground that gives me enough time to get avay or kick them in the face, depending on the mood.

I trained in Tai Kwon Do when I was 10-13 or so. Ended up a fourth degree green belt. Tought me a lot about self-discipline and persistence. Even to this day, a lot of that stuff is subconsciously engrained in me. I have a proper fighting stance and keep a calm mind and know how to block, etc. I don't fight and avoid situations that would lead to a fight. I think that's a large part of the spiritual maturity side of it. But for those times when it's unavoidable or you have to come to someone elses aid, its great to have some training.

thanks thats a pretty funny video at certain times. I want practical self defense but it would also be great to compete /try out for something with a belt system. which looks like it is going to be BJJ right now.

Hapkido and Mu Duk Kwan.

Both are great for self defense.

Mu Duk Kwan / Tan Soo Do looks interesting

Yeah I just tried Judo today and learned that being a smaller opponent can be a great advantage. It's pretty interesting using your opponents own weight against them. As long as you maintain your center of balance.
