woah, talk about takeover. controlling an entire country's typo domains...

If I was head of Cameroon I would of taken Ham's idea and told him no, then just used it to make some extra cash on the side

If you guys want to know who's going to be hot hot hot in late '07 and through to '08: Demand Media.

Good article, too. +Rep. Biz 2.0 is churning out some pretty good articles these days.

Yeah, Business 2.0 had a good article a few months ago about Richard Rosenblatt (responsible for the success of a little site called Myspace) created Demand Media and bought enom.com, the 2nd largest domain company. He has some pretty big plans for it...

Richard Rosenblatt's plan for millions of MySpaces - December 1, 2006

i was gonna buy some .cm names about a year ago but they were impossible to register and really expensive. I didnt have any cash a year ago. I think you can get .om names still, but you have to have residency in oman jordan

This part sounds fishy:

"Within weeks Ham had struck so many deals that, according to rivals, he controlled most of the direct connections. "I kept telling them to hit them harder," Ham says in a rare boastful moment. "We brought down the servers many times." During one six-month period starting in late 2000, Ham registered more than 10,000 names."

Thats about 55 domain names per day for 6 months? How the heck did it bring down the servers.

From the article, I understand you can't since they are already entirely bought out by this guy. Thoughts anyone?

Incorrect. The guy didn't buy any of the domains, he has software running (with the approval and support of the government) that redirects all UNREGISTERED domains to his ads. I'm assuming you have to be a citizen of Camarroon to register those domains which is why there are so many that aren't registered, thus giving the guy millions of typo traffic.

If that is the case, where do you buy .cm domains?

If it's a really good domain dropping you're gonna have to be hitting it with tons and tons of requests and hopefully one of those requests snags the domain...

if you have some 200 servers each with a few instances running a script trying to grab the domain every few seconds... you could easily kill some servers.
