Pretty cool news bros: The patent that google was awarded is legit, new, self-driving car technology... Lots of cool new concepts involved:

Yeah you may have heard that they were running a few self-driving cars around their little track before, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. They put tons of money into research at different universities across the nation and after filing in May, this week they were officially awarded the patent for this system, and it reveals that they've really thought this shit out well.

Although the technology described may sound fanciful, Google has been testing a fleet of driverless cars for several years. The vehicles combine artificial intelligence with the firm's Google Street View maps as well as video cameras and a range of sensors.

Experts say Google's "passion project" could end up creating a valuable revenue stream It has adapted a fleet of Toyota Prius and Audi TT models which have driven 160,000 miles with limited human input and more than 1,000 miles without driver involvement.

The cars travelled along Highway 1 between Los Angeles and San Francisco, over the Golden Gate Bridge and elsewhere.

Google was given a patent for 'a method' for self driving cars. They were not given a patent for all self driving cars.

Toyota was doing it last year. Carnegie Mellon and Stanford researchers were doing it even earlier than that.
 
I'm pretty sure this leaked out like a year ago. The Google cars are different from other self-driving cars, because they can navigate real city streets and make decisions to avoid running over pedestrians and such. The other self-driving cars all need to be on a static course.

This is not true. I've been to demonstrations and talked with the people at CMU who designed/coded/built self driving cars and they've had cars drive on real roads with no input.
 
^^^ yeah, pretty sure DARPA has been involved in setting up entire mock cities and neighborhoods out in the desert...and then teams of companies/college students compete with their vehicle designs.

i have a family member that always used to talk about this stuff over the past 5-10 years. i would imagine they would/are currently working with the Google team for stuff related to this...

If you have any trouble with your self driving car you won't be able to get in touch with anyone at Google to get it fixed.
 
If you type in your destination in a google car, you have to pay attention, you may want to go to the club, but it drives you to an auto insurance office and you look at your GPS, says "did you mean..."
