I was born a democrat, well according to my mother. Until the last few years (and I'm 27 now) I never knew the difference (between Republican, Democrat, other). My mother always told me I was a democrat, I never voted democrat because I always thought they where douche bags. But according to my house hold Democrat was where it was at. As it turns out I've always been an Independent.

Who else here had their political sides drawn by parents or teachers or otherwise wile they where young? It's always funny to look back and tell them they are, wrong, wrong, wrong.

I agree my political view was influenced from my school. Although now I'm not sure if it would have changed my political views if I were in an another school.

No different to being born a "Yankees" fan. People love teams.

I was born a Christian, wrong, wrong, wrong.

Its not there fault its that wisconsin union mentality. Both my parents thought they were democrats to because thats what the union says they are. The funny thing is most democraps never really find out that they are much more to the right on most issues. This mind washing to draw party lines has changed though (no more unions) so the only thing the democraps have to brainwash is the internet and MTV and they are pretty good at using it

My parents were hardcore republicans with a raging hard-on for Christianity. I went with it and thought democrats were evil until my teenage years. I was about 13 when I started questioning our religion, at 15 I told them I was an atheist and they simply would not have it. That's when I realized how close-minded they were and stopped trusting them, I started thinking for myself and years later I consider myself an independent. I still hold a grudge for bible-humping republicans to this day- stop ruining your children and let them do their own thinking.

So what your saying is your parents actually helped you become a free thinker by manipulating you with church? Sounds like they actually did you a favor

In this case, absolutely. Had my parents not been so arrogant and pushy with their beliefs, I may not have 'snapped out of it'. While I'm thankful for the healthy dose of perspective, I still carry around a lot of the old hostility- Im highly intolerant of both sides of the political spectrum and religious fanaticism.

Not everyone would react the way I did, in fact all my friends were going through the exact same thing at the time. Some of them just rolled with it and took the path of least resistance, others beared through it and came out a free thinker on the other side. I'm not sure what makes the difference, maybe the parents have to overstep their boundaries at some point to put it in perspective.
