If you're sitting at the bar and the bartender buys you a drink for whatever reason, what do you tip him?
Is he your boyfriend or just trying to get you in the sack?

Depends on the drink and the tender serving the concoction of course.
Bear in mind that WildGunner no longer sips poisonous libations regularly, the quoted figures may be need adjustment for inflation, the impact of the economy, Occupy Wallstreet, quality of establishment and other variables based on your locale.
10% to 20% total up to half the price of the drink given or half of what you originally ordered (if you get a different drink for free). This is for drinks $50 and under and multiple orders.
Examples:
You're drinking $50 shots of the newest top shelf tequila to the States and bartender drops one on the house. That's $10 for the "free" one plus your usual tipping rate.
If you are knocking back the same $50 shots, but this time with a scantily clad architectural grad you met at a new exhibition and the bartender upgrades you a few $100 shots from the back, that's either $10 per shot or $25 total which is half of your original $50 shots.
Ten percent for single or two drink pivots Usually no less than $2.
Examples:
2 $10 drinks = $2 tip minimum up to your choice.
2 $7 drinks = $2 tip minimum even though 10% = $1.40
Of course this is all if you feel so inclined.
A general baseline is $20 to $25 for every $100 spent at the bar minimum up to $500. + or - for service, attitude, information etc...good bartenders are useful. Treat them well.
In time if a beneficial relationship grows you can find free drinks being the norm and no "tip" is required. However, always keep a mental note of things and drop a $50 their way ever so often. Fifties have more punch and stamina than a plain, raggedy, oil-stained twenty and usually will return broad smiles, more access and another drink. Which of course you respectfully decline.
Cheers. Drink with purpose. Enjoy it well.
