Least resource consuming Antivirus for Windows?

I've never really cared much for AV softwares (especially as they can only detect widely spread crap based on file signature) but now I've got myself a good system for gaming that I'm also going to use for work and interwebs in general. The only reason I'm considering installing an antivirus software now is that I'm going to be downloading a lot of torrents and stuff from usenet and like AIDS, it's inevitably going to be a matter of time before windoze catches something.

So what I am looking for is something that doesn't use too many resources. Ideally it shouldn't even run in the background and I don't even have to install it. It should only scan things that I want it to, when I tell it to. NO "realtime" protection crap or starting up by itself on bootup.

Any suggestions? Another alternative I have in mind is using something like torrentflux on a vps in combination with a virus scanner, or just a windows vps.

Dude - you are a cheap bastard. You're stealing shit and want your AV to not hog resources. Boob pics tell the story.

Linux - Thats what the antivirus is called.
Least resource consuming and lowest cost. Just format your windows machine and load it. Or set it as dual boot system.

I don't understand why people get upset about hotlinking in 2011. We're talking about a few images, not like it's movies or anything.

As for AV... I use avast with silent/gaming mode on.

Because in 2011 bandwidth still costs money. Real money, not that bullshit bitcoin money. Dolla dolla bills ya'll.

I use Avira. The daily nag screen is a bit annoying, but I can live with clicking "ok" once a day. Otherwise it's fast, low footprint and has a great detection rate.

Microsoft Security Essentials

Microsoft Security Essentials - Free Antivirus for Windows

Once again Microsoft is at the top of their game, the shit's free and you'll never even know it's running. It's also very highly rated compared with paid AV software.

I'm using this. My computer has been running smooth ever since. It's totally free and you never have to worry about your license getting expired and having to pay for a new license.

It does let shit through. It doesn't monitor malicious scripts on websites using JS or Flash (which BTW, even Adsense will show these from malicious advertisers that change the ad after approval), and it's reactive.

Honestly, anyone that logs into any website on Windows should be using an Internet Security suite, not just a virus and malware scan.

I've had to reformat a spare desktop twice because MSE let shit get installed while running my bots.

I believe you can stop that daily nag screen by editing the permissions of an Avira file to deny "read and execute" access to the "system" user. Search google for more detailed instructions if you want to do it.

I just run Microsoft Security Essentials now.
