for drives that wont spin?

everyone knows how to use the software tools, but im wondering how those data recovery houses do it?

i have like 20 old hard drives that are dead. mostly porn and mp3s but some personal digicam pictures etc

Unless the disk surface has been severely damaged, they will often just replace the head or the circuit board, then try to read it in its original casing. For bad physical damage, they may take out the platters and put them in a special machine that can dump all readable sectors. From there, they can piece together anything that is not too badly corrupted.

Most of what they do, you would probably be able to do yourself if only you were able to replace the part that caused the failure, but it requires access to a clean room. That's mostly what you are paying for when you use one of those data recovery services. 1 piece of dust on the platter is like hitting a rock when you are on a skateboard.

One thing I know is that they'll need to go into a clean lab where the platters are physically removed and put into drives of the same make and model. This will cost thousands of dollars per drive but is totally doable unless the platters themselves took damage.

(That would take a seriously hard blow, or even a bullet.)

So how bad you want that shit?

Edit: jryan beat me to it. Argh.

I would say 50% of the time this works. It's always worth a shot looking online for the same make and model and buying a used drive of ebay OR you just buy the circuit board. You do NOT need a clean room for just replacing that.

However, if you need to get more 'gutsy' you should have a clean room.
