Peal Harbor - FDR baited the Japanese by signing some military pact that he knew was considered an act of war. The US military intelligence had cracked Japanese codes 6 months before the attack - they knew they were coming. It was staged to open another battlefront to benefit the usual parties. Details of all that are in the public record, most of it in the official investigation that was done shortly after the attack but was lost in all the war mongering and nationalist hoopla.
I've heard this theory, but what I don't get is that the MIC wasn't around yet at that time... Weren't all the biggest name war machine corps born in the coming years?
There have been quite a few essays on FDR's tactics to get the US to enter WWII. The ultimate beneficiaries as usual were financial cronies and an enormous government expansion. I can't give you any links for further reading since I didn't bookmark them; I guess I was too concerned about Snooki being pregnant (who the hell is that anyway?)

That's the major book on it. I haven't read it, but apparently the author thinks that FDR was legitimately worried that Germany was going to take over Europe and Russia, and Japan was going to expand. The US public didn't want to get involved, but that changed after Pearl Harbor.

The how isn't really an issue as there are a million ways we could go to war with the American public majority approval. Look at the invasion of Iraq. "An extremist group located in Afghanistan carried out a terrorist attack against American citizens. . . so we're invading Iraq!" I will be shocked if we're not in Iran by the end of 2012 though. I consider the most likely scenario a preemptive strike by Israel followed by full scale "UN" invasion. Obama has stated over and over again that we will back up Israel and Israel has been itching to blow Iran off the face of the map for decades (centuries if you consider Iran the Arab front rather than the sovereign nation). The value of controlling the straight is incredibly high and military resistance is comparatively low, that fact alone should tell you Amuricka will go after it.
As day 8 of the ground war approaches, my heart goes out to those families that have already suffered the irreparable loss of a family member or loved one. I hope other patriotic WF members join with me in reiterating our support for the American fighting man in Iran during "Operation Bum Rush the Guy with the Nuke," and will continue to show our support until every one of them comes home.
