Mann is one of the longest members of the clubby world of domain speculators, and he's buying up names in force these days. And not all on the aftermarket, as some others do. But new names. Dot-com names that aren't registered -- even though 100 million-plus already are -- that he then turns around and sells for a few hundred bucks, sometimes far more.

He must have way too much money to waste, by using a registrar, why not start his own registrar and buy his domains straight from Verisign?

Inb4 raging webmasters who can't register .com domains because of this peasant.

The wholesale price of a dot com domain is $7.85, that's how much he'd be paying if he were to buy his domains straight from Verisign. The domain registrar business (leaving examples such as Network Solutions aside) is a low margin one for the most part, so you'll be able to obtain domains at a very low price ($7.85 + some pocket change and I'm being generous by using that term) if you buy in bulk.

Oh and his registrar is included in the Sedo MLS as well as in the Afternic MLS. What this means is that his domains will appear in the registration path at pretty much all important registrars (including GoDaddy and Network Solutions). So if someone searches for Domain123.com at GoDaddy (for example) and he owns Domain123.com, then instead of the "the domain is not available" message, Domain123.com will appear in the registration path as a premium domain and you'll be able to buy it through that registrar.

That's a LOT of exposure so all in all, he probably decided that becoming a registrar is just not worth it at this point and I tend to agree.

Meh, haters gonna hate.

I own some pretty amazing domains including one worders and three letter dot coms (so domains that are obviously a lot better than any of the "next best thing" alternatives you'd be able to buy), yet frequently receive emails from people who think they "deserve" those domains simply because "I'm not using them" or <insert herp derp reason here>.

Replying to those emails is kind of like posting in troll threads, not worth it.

If you come across people who label investing in domains as unethical, ask them if they think that those who invest in art/gold/real estate/whatever suck as well. But if you value your sanity, I'd recommend ignoring them altogether.
 
Dude I posted about those comments only being about 6 or 7 deep. Started looking at some a little further down...

These people are straight stoopid
There should be laws against domain squatting, they buy something they don't need and you need in the hope to blackmail those who have an actual use for the domain.

People like this Mann produce ZERO goods in society and contribute ZERO to developing the economy, if anything they hold it back.

This person obviously has no idea how much money $8 x 14,962 is, and how it eventually winds up in the economy.

If he's using a US based registrar, they obviously have some/a majority of US based employees, who in turn, get a paycheck and spend it.... thus contributing to the economy.
