Lukep P-A-T-H-E-T-I-C...really. It's sad to see somebody so disconnected from reality. Really sad.
Better food in Thailand? We put too much salt here? Yes perhaps some restaurants do, but it's better than MSGs that pretty much every restaurant in Thailand uses. Google up Monosodium Glutamate and see how great that shit is for your body.
You're American living the Expat life in a shitty country. Sure life is great and Thailand is off the hook! But how the fuck do you not see that this is completely different from a local's perspective? How?
2K is far from living like a king in Bangkok, it's comfortable middle class for a foreigner but no more since you don't get local prices.
What you don't realize about the people living in Thailand is that the basic nessecities which we pay a lot for in the west are very cheap there. You can get a great warm meal for $1 in a restaurant. You can get a bottle of spirits for $3, an airconditioned apartment for $150/month. A night out in a nightclub with live music and table service for $40 (and it's usually split 3-5 people). You can ride an hour in a taxi for $5. You can fly to Phuket from Bangkok return for less than $100, book a basic hut on the beach for $5-$7. I think you have a misunderstanding about the living standards of most Thais. Because Thailand isn't taxed to death, the basic consumer goods are cheap and plentiful. Of course the average Thai can't splurge on expensive consumer goods, but their life isn't stressful at all since most of their needs are easily met. Then add all the non-material goods like their sociable and sensual culture and it quickly becomes a better deal than being a middle clase drone in the west.
60 years old, no job experience and you can't find a job? Open up a food stand/laundry service or something similar and make enough to get by.
Not talking about Bangkok and 2k like a king, go outside the big city and you'll certainly do it. Even go out of center in Bangkok and you can live comfortably. You can't expect to hit high class clubs for that money of course. Definately not.
About flying to Phuket and back for $100 and $150 for an airconditioned appartment: on these points, I think you missunderstood that $100 aren't $100 for Thai people. Just compare the average income to our standards and you'll get the idea.
For basic needs: depends how you define them. If you're born in a 'shithole' your basic needs might be different than our basic needs. Do you consider a reasonable internet connection basic ? Are nice clothes basic ? Again, I doubt $40 is reasonable for the average Thai income to spend on a night. Check the average income stats, even for places like BKK.
Pretty naive to think that it's so damn easy to start out like that if you're 60 years old, jobless and broke.
A webdesigner in Bangkok makes about $1000 a month. I see plenty of Thais flying. There's a big middle class in Thailand and also a lot very rich.
Thais get around all these things you mention by being smart. Have you been to Bangkok and seen how classy Thai girls dress on a clothes budget 1/50 of what western women spend. Clothes are another thing which is very cheap also for Thais. And Thais are not huge drinkers so one bottle is split among a few friends making it maybe $10 each, which is small money for having a great time out.
Additionally Thais share stuff and usually buy apartments instead of rent like a sort of family investment pool.
You really have to experience this stuff to see that a lot of what we believe is the only way to do things isn't really.
I'm getting your point without any doubt, but again, you mention thais don't drink much. Bou you aren't a Thai (from what I think at least)
A webdesigner making $1000 a month won't be easily able to spend $100 for a flight just for fun.
It all comes down what you define as basic needs / what you are looking for. Personally I don't want and don't feel like living with $1000 per month or $2000. No matter it's Thailand or the US, with a decent budget you will experience a similiar standard everywhere.
In Thailand you'll be able to get it for cheaper up to a certain price. But then again, look for a nice car in Thailand and compare what you pay for it compared to Western countries. As soon as you get 'exclusive' stuff, it's not a big difference anymore.
And in the end, the aim is to be above average. That's why we make money. To get high class shit. And high class / above average costs more than average. No Matter Thailand, Somalia, Germany or US.
And tell me again why you would want to live somewhere where anyone with money can hurt you and get away with it?
Anybody living this sort of lifestyle in Europe? I'd like to make the move but would prefer Europe over Asia, just a personal preference.
Please chime in if you are in Europe living it up... I'd like to get some tips![]()
OJ didn't get off because of his money.
.
do you mean... make 50k a year and live like you make 500k?
You only think you're safe in America bro. The only thing that makes you safe is that no one knows who the fuck you are.And if you deny that there's more corruption, organized crime and related danger that affects the average citizen in Thailand than there is in the US you're only fooling yourself. To use rusvik's example, someone with money/power is MUCH more likely to fuck you in Thailand and get away with it than in the US.

I don't know, I have never been to Thailand. Are you suggesting that overall I would be "safer" living in Thailand than in the US? Surely you jest.
