Such a stupid thing for them to have done IMO.

It's going to be so confusing for consumers.

[ Is pissed off that his .LOANS application was denied, apparently $20 wasn't enough ]

I agree that it will mess up the complete interwebs and its a money making party for icann. But at the same time, Im looking forward to the sunrise period when I get to book a crazy bunch of Domains and sell them off in a year. See you at Flippa in 2014 bitches.

I just dont know what the fuck will 1300 registries do with shitty long-ass TLDs they have applied for.

They will try to do what .com has perfected and that is branding. Branding to the limit that everyone will know that TLD and associate it to the internet and web sites in general. Well that is the plan, i assume at least..

But IMO no way in hell they are going to succeed and the .com prices will rise even higher. The only one who will make shit loads of profits here will be ICANN.. I read that there are supposed to be over 1,900 new tld applications. So much crap to go through that the well established tlds will just get more popular. Hopefully this will turn out into a flop soon and shit will get back to normal.

branders gonna brand.

Of course, there are a lot of stupid people who applied for a lot of stupid tlds, hoping to make a buck.

$185,000 application fee x 1900 application requests = $351,500,000.

Bravo ICANN.

Bravo.

I didn't look at all of them but the first one that caught my eye was .dds. I'm curious what they plan to do with it but my thoughts where to use it as an exclusive tld for dentist only with many perks involved.

Have something like $999 year reg fees but the registration would include a host of tools, website builders, marketing including adwords placements. All registered TLDs would come with inclusion into the .dds global directory. They could take it even farther and have special event packages with exclusive discounts for meetings, CEU's / staff education, medical billing platforms, office networks.

Tons of ideas with this TLD. If done right the TLD could own the dental industry.

This would be a good time to build a new search engine. Pretty sure we all know how google will treat these.

.

$185,000 x 1930 applications = $357,050,000. That's just beginning where those who applied for the same domain will probably go to high bidder at auction.

I remember blogging about this like 4 years ago. It's taken them this long to get closer to something that could happen?! I also see this as a huge monopolizing fest where everyday words will be owned by the companies with the biggest pockets.

I think ICANN is doing it all wrong. The right way to do this would have been for them maintain control of the gTLD words - and instead release them as extensions in stages whereupon companies could have bought thousands of names on each.

So instead of selling the whole .lol extension to ONE buyer, make .lol a new extension and have people run in to scoop up a gazillion new names on the .lol extension. Just like with .com, .net, etc. Now we'll just have a bunch of squatters grabbing extensions and sitting on them unused just for the sake of selling or waiting for value to grow.

I just bought ".SPAM". Hopefully google doesn't have any problem with it.

...BTW, I suddenly feel really sorry for the adult industry that just had to fork out all that money for .XXX domains lately... Now they'll have to buy the .PORN and .SEX domains too!
(FML)

domain names will become less important as we move towards using AOL style keywords in a sandboxed facebook browser :p

Are they saying all of these were accepted?

And are they open to the public, or are they controlled by those who paid for them?

Looks like multiple companies applied for the same terms, like there's 9 different companies who applied for "ART", I imagine those would go to an auction. But yeah, the companies who win the terms would probably be able to do whatever they want with them..

First conflict of interest: CyberBlackmailing

Let's say I grab the tld "SUCKS", "PORNO" or "ASS."

I could go an make derogatory sites at microsoft.sucks or catholicchurch.porno or JLos.ass and GET PAID for selling them these sites.

Even if ICANN refuses to sell any derogatory .tlds, (and changes their name to ICANT ) there are still going to be conflicts when the owner of any new TLD sells their domains, because they aren't the authority like ICANN is. (i.e. Who resolves the squatting disputes?)

I think this was a SLOPPY move on ICANN's part. I know they don't care though, not with a $351m payday...

I think some brands will have some level of success, but this will ultimately strengthen the existing TLD's and ccTLD's even further.
