Well, generally when I find a website that I'd like to own and I go back in time to snag it, I try to go back as close as possible (sometimes within a few hours) to the original time it was registered just to mess with the ex-owner.
Or you think of an awesome domain name, find out it's not registered (start doubting self-maybe this domain is worthless), register anyway, then let it sit because your parents died and left you with an inheritance...
Here's a tip:
I usually do my own pre-check on domains in bulk by generating a simple .bat script in DOS that pings my list of domains. Then, for all the names that don't respond to a ping - I narrow down those to the best ones and check them with a proper bulk checker at Namecheap.
(If a domain responds to a ping, it's taken for sure. If it doesn't respond - it may or may not be taken, but if it is - it could be parked).
