The article says there are 130,000 NATO troops in that country. I thought Afganistan was a small country... can someone tell me why the whole country isn't under Western control and being converted into a democracy (I really don't know how this works)?

• Afghanistan is about the size of Texas

• Afghanistan is unconquerable

• A healthy chunk of the NATO troops are stationed there to guard the opium plantations and maintain safe passage for the CIA/Wall Street smuggling routes out of the country

• NATO doesn't create democracies, they create tin pot dictators, sectarian violence, gangs, and failed states

What's there to worry about? We eliminate enemies and increase the wealth of our own nation. It wasn't that far back that countries would go to war with the winning country securing and looting the losing nation.

This phrase came to prominence after George Bush said that "terror is not the true faith of Islam" and that "Islam is peace." This was after 9/11, so obviously he wasn't trying to point out that all people claiming to be Muslim were peaceful.

The Taliban doesn't claim to be peaceful, and part of the point that Bush and others were trying to make is that there ARE "Muslims" who ARE NOT peaceful. So when put into context, using that phrase sarcastically isn't quite as witty as it might seem.
