I'm only familiar with the laws in CO and CA. It's not just "any" doctor. You go to a doctor who specializes in this. Regular doctors don't wanna risk losing their license if the laws change, plus I think the law is set up so it's not a regular practitioner. All these doctors do is say yes or no to your request of getting a license. But yea, it's pretty easy to get, at least in California.

ly2 - I had 78 plants in my buddy's basement at one point. You're going to need more than just an hps. If it's a small setup, which it will be if it's 4X4 ft., then just get a conversion ballast for hps and metal hallide. The two options emit completely different light and you need the metal halide for the growth cycle and hps for budding. If you skip the growth cycle with metal halide, the roots and stems won't be strong enough to sustain your buds and it will fail.

600 watts is the most light per electrical use and this is plenty of light for a 4X4 space. If you were doing something big or medium (I would consider my setup medium), then you want 1000watts and different cycles for different batches of plants.

The bulb I bought for the 600w is an upgraded bulb that has a wider spectrum in it than the normal bulbs. It was like $100 extra.

Yeah I bought hortilux bulbs for everything which were over $100 each and have a larger spectrum of light, there are a few other brands with similar products.

I flowered with 1 hps and 2 mh (one on each side of the hps) because that's what I had and it didn't seem bad at all.

I think the nutes are more important than the light, personally. Not some fancy nutes, just giving them a good dose of the P and K without N when you switch the light cycle(lets them know what time it is), then stop feeding N so they use up what's in the soil. If you have a sativa you might add small amount of N for a few weeks since they take so long to finish and you don't want to give them N near harvest, even with flushing.
