I fancy trying to lean the piano. I know there are quite a few software packages which use a midi keyboard connected to your PC to help you learn to play. I have a good quality, full sized midi keyboard with weighted keys lying around at home so i am considering trying one of these software packages. Has anyone tried to learn this way? Any success/recomendations? I dont want to spend a fortune btw

Thanks man, I appreciate what you are saying, my issue is time. I often work funny hours so its hard for me to pick a day and time and say im going to commit to doing something then, its the same reason I dont have a personal trainer at the gym, i would end up missing half my sessions. If i could grab my keyboard whenever I found myself with a spare 20 mins I think i would stick with it better.
Actually No. I compose music as a hobby and have learned Piano myself.
I'd recommend getting a personal teacher with experience. There are multiple tricks of the trade that a software simply cannot teach you. Finger exercises, understanding the tunes, the melody, grasping them, learning to play by the ear and a whole lot of techniques can only be taught by a competent teacher.
I know and understand your point of not being able to give a time. Most webmasters suffer that trait. But I'd recommend you getting yourself organized.
Also, when learning Piano - you will only spend a limited time with your teacher. Much of it will be going towards you spending some lonetime with your keyboard and practicing.
Even if you attend classes twice a week, it should be enough. The rest will be gone in perfecting your fingers.
You have to attend proper classes or a complete video instruction course for learning piano if you are really interested in playing piano of highest caliber. Its just an opinion may be you wont like it

my wife taught me how to play half of the titanic theme song. I got bored of it and started to write my own shit (still can't read a single note to this day)..

Granted it's not the same instrument, but my brother and I learned guitar 10 years ago only from sources we could find online.
Damn, I really like those. Only criticism, sometimes you can get a touch out of time on a note, polish that up and you'll be really good, imo.
You don't need a teacher or software. Many of the best musicians know very little about the technicals of music. Just get in there and play what feels best for you. Find a song you want to play and search for it on Youtube and practice it until you learn it. Learn to play it slow and then speed it up. All the other stuff you can pick up along the way.

I found a cool site a few weeks back that teaches you the basics as well as has some videos teaching you some easy and familiar songs. I like the fact that you can pick up the songs pretty easily, because it gives me the motivation to keep learning.
