Rochelle Ballantyne plays chess the same way she walks through the streets of New York, determined to reach her goal without letting any obstacles slow her down.

The 17 year old from Brooklyn is just a few wins away from becoming the first female African-American to attain the ranking of chess master.

She crushes her opponents in a sport dominated by men.

Ballantyne grew up in a single parent home in the working class neighborhood of East Flatbush. She first learned to play chess from her grandmother, who didn't want that background to limit or prevent her from reaching her fullest potential. Ballantyne did not disappoint.

[2:47] "When I push myself, then nothing can stop me."

When it came time for middle school she wound up at I.S. 318, an inner-city public school that is home to the best chess team in the entire United States. Assistant Principal John Galvin oversees the chess program.

[4:53] "Rochelle was one of our best players that we've ever had in our school. She won several individual national championships."

Her time at the middle school is featured in Brooklyn Castle, a documentary about the chess team released earlier this week.

I was hoping it was obvious:

1. Because she's portraying black people in a positive light, which is rarely seen in the media.

2. Boo is a term of affection/endearment applied to the opposite-sex to convey a sense of fondness or attraction.

Wickedfire is one of the most racist boards I know, apart from straight up hate-centered forums like stormfront or niggermania. It's good to remind some of the fucking idiots here from time to time that blacks are smart, kind, loving, powerful, and generally good people.

So spare me your bollocks, almost everyone here is racist to some degree, and I feel no reservations whatsoever saying that I'm proud of this young black girl and I hope she really does reach for the stars.

Not at all. I'm not racist at all actually - I'm too smart to be. I am realistic however and I understand human nature, including my own subconscious biases.

The very fact that you want to "portray black people in a positive light" is racist because it's strictly promoting one race against others. Hitler certainly would have wanted to portray germans in a positive light.

I want to portray anarchists in a positive light, so perhaps I'm an -ist of some kind, but I wouldn't want to portray any one race over any other so I can safely say I'm not a racist. Get it?

Do african-americans NEED to be portrayed in a positive light? Of course. But do they deserve it; that's the real question. I'd say not as a race... No one race deserves it, and we should always judge each individual on their separate merits.

She seems like a smart chick. I wish her well, but I don't think more of "african americans" because "they" were able to produce a person like her.
