I recently got introduced to just about the geekiest products I can remember in while. Field notes are little books for taking notes. Based on the old school concept of hand writing notes while working in the "field". Every quarter they come out with a new edition in their colors lineup (non affiliate links). They change the appearance and materials each qtr.

The current one is bad ass. The paper is indestructible . It's called the expedition series.

Aesthetically, you’ll find an all-new design with plenty to like: a hi-visibility “Antarctic Survey Orange” front cover and “Polar Night Black” back cover, with a subtle varnish effect featuring a topographic map of Antarctica. The body pages feature our popular ‘dot grid’ graph paper, printed in light gray.

But the real innovation here is the paper. It’s maybe not even fair to call it paper. The whole book is printed on Yupo Synthetic paper, an amazing water- and tear-proof paper extruded from polypropylene pellets in Chesapeake, Virginia. We could go on and on about our new books’ durability and incredible properties (especially in concert with the new FN-19 Space Pen), and we will, in this series of 12 (reasonably) scientific tests:

They print them in limited runs and sell out quick. Any of you guys currently using Field notes?

I love the concept of keeping a memo pad on me at all times. What gets me though is the having to also carry a pen/pencil as well. Just doesn't fit in the pockets nearly as well so I typically resort to just using Evernote on my phone. I've got a Galaxy Note II (which is an amazing phone btw) and I've started sketching out stuff using the stylus if it's a memo that would benefit from a visual.

Its a constant problem. I haven't used Evernote for note taking, usually I use it for screen grabs and things like payment confirmation. I just found out Evernote does have OCR recognition for Text in image files.

I like the idea of something like field notes because they are small and fit in back pocket and it's a way of documenting your life's work as well as thoughts. I think it would be something my kids may want to tea when I am dead and gone. If not I always feel better after jottin things down. My problem is it comes and goes. I will write all the time and then stop for like a year

Sounds like trendy crap for the people who don't actually need them (99%). For professionals in the jungle or something that do need them, sounds good for them.

They have a normal version that's just on normal paper. The color series is pure marketing genius. The last one was called "traveling salesman" and was much more useable. These guys have created a nice little rebill and
People are eating it up. They have an interesting business model. And have an interesting approach.

check out a post on the designers page (for a different product)

It sounds like it is the same thing as the Rite in the Rain notepads I've used when I was in the army--durable and waterproof writing paper--but only thing different is that it comes w/ a non-tactical design that hobbiests love.

The current version is very similar. The next one won't be indestructible. They will be on totaly different paper and have a different theme. Obviously these are not for everybody, but if you like note taking with a touch of collecting you might like it

Nah, my preferred choice is Leuchtturm 1917 medium or slim master (A4) dotted (like a grid with light dots, real neat), or Whitelines A4 (grey paper, white grid). IMO Field Notes are overrated unless you need the special paper for the outdoors. I'll take a Moleskine Cahier extra large, but they can be a little expensive. Regular sized Moleskines are too awkward for me to use. However, if I didn't already have a bunch of steno pads, I might check out the steno pad they offer. It looks okay.

You might like doane paper they make a nice grid + lines paper in all kinds of formats.

thats too much shit to carry around.

I already pack my cell phone with me, I just make audio notes as needed on the phone.

Paper notes are infinitely more useful than digital notes, but I'm not really the kind of person to orgasm over a notepad. It is nice to know the top shelf product in new niches though.

Old school, sturdy gear is always a winner. L.L. Bean is a testimony to that. Good shit that is 20 years behind the current date is always a decent niche if done right. Think outside the box AND beyond sometimes.

Totally forgot about these guys. Just picked up a 3 pack of the writing pads. We'll see how it goes. I really like the light grids/dot grid paper because the lines are there if you need them, but they're light enough that you can also ignore them as well.

I carry this with me everywhere. Refills with standard 4.5 x 3.25 notebooks.

In another life I have dreams of being an author so my wife got it for me for my birthday years ago to keep track of all the ideas I have and want to write about. It has saved me from forgetting stuff more times than I can count. It's like my second wallet, never go anywhere without it.

You can use a synthetic paper like Teslin Or Artisyn to print or write things on it. It's waterproof, wrinkle proof, weather proof, heat resistant, and tear resistant. Basically if you were to write on this paper and put it a the bottom of your pool for a year, it would be the same when you took it out.
