Lol yeah I never understood it either, it's obviously based on a time where the government had the same weapons that citizens have. If the government wants to take out the population they could just use an engineered bioweapon. You can't shoot a virus!
Not to mention they have nukes, smart bombs, satellites, tanks, drones, jet fighters and god knows what else behind closed doors.
They could cut you off from petrol, cut your power and water, release a bioweapon then sit back and watch the country tear itself apart. Armed or not, it won't make a lick of difference.
Even simpler, they could poison your water supply. Shoot that!
They could do that. Because Americans are so well-armed, they would have to do that. And that would completely remove any perceived legitimacy they have to lead, right?

You're missing the point. Nobody expects to be able to take on the US Military with handguns and rifles. But an armed citizenry makes it much harder for the government to get away with doing the evils to the people that governments have ALWAYS historically done.
If the US government resorts to using the military against its own people then we win because the government would then be de-legitmized in the eyes of the people and the rest of the world.
Get it? It's a built in protection that is meant to prevent that from ever happening, not to defend against it actually happening.

You guys forget our military is made up of our brothers, sons, neighbors. Many of these guys don't approve of what's going on either. They took an oath to defend the constitution. Not a tyrannous president.

But then realized that it doesn't matter and that has been the case in every such circumstance throughout history.
They will follow orders. They will collect their tax free paycheck in a struggling economy.
Even more... A good percentage of them will enjoy expressing dominance over the society that they don't identify with. Human nature, it's a bitch.
A good percentage of our male youth population has already been virtually trained/conditioned to fight in the streets of America, anyways, via Call of Duty and other similar games/simulations.

When you see the streets filled with a million people I think you will see the opposite of what you suggest. You are correct these guys will follow orders. They will arrest and kill individuals but when it comes to large chunks of population it will be different.
