Do you use a humidifier in your office/bedroom?

Symptoms almost every morning when I wake up: itchy skin, stuffy nose, dry chappy lips. It gets really dry in here when I crank the heat up. Everyone keeps telling me to get a humidifier, but I remember my parents had a huge one at home when I was a kid and it didn't do shit, still had the same symptoms back then. Are humidifiers today better than they were 20 years ago? Do you use one that you recommend?

I use it in the bedroom at night, then move it to the office during the day. Running it 24/7 pretty much. It's a must in colder climates.

Having been a resident of the northern plains my entire life I know this problem too well. In winter the air in my house gets very, very dry.

First - if you are a home owner - get a whole house humidifier. This hooks up to your furnace system and delivers water to the heated air going to your house vents. Anyone with basic tool skills can install this in an hour or two and it costs under $100.

You do have to be careful though because the natural tendency is to turn the humidity up to "normal" summer levels like 50%. If you do this water will condense on windows behind curtains/blinds and you will get mold. You need to dial it back a bit, depending on your house.

Otherwise the standard humidifiers work well for single rooms. Close your door to prevent air flow if possible.

Also, invest in a quality lotion for your body. I have used Neutrogena for many years and it prevents me from getting itchy. As a bonus it also prevents static problems with clothing if you put it on your whole body.

Humidifiers that you put on the furnace generally suck dick after a few years. They leak a shitton of water and usually it ends up condensating inside of the furnace and making shit rust or go bad. Just get one of the models that sits on the floor. You'll have to refill it every now and then but it's much better than taking the risk of damaging your furnace.

i live in an 800 sqft apartment, and i have radiator heating which really makes it fucking dry in here...

i fill the bathtub half way with hot water once per day and it really helps. i had a humidity reader last year so i know this works.

They are like every other piece of equipment in a home -they need to be inspected and maintained. The tap line they use is identical to the ones used by refrigerators. If installed correctly they will not leak.

And as far as the "after a few years"...well....that's life. I have owned three houses. One was 101 years old. One was 10 years old. Our current house we built new.

The 101 year old one had the least maintenance. Go figure...
