In October 2012, the Librarian of Congress, who determines exemptions to a strict anti-hacking law called the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), decided that unlocking cellphones would no longer be allowed. But the librarian provided a 90-day window during which people could still buy a phone and unlock it. That window closes on Jan. 26

Nobody seems to care about pissing on the 2nd amendment. Lets see if they care about their phones.

This is for real?

All I have to say is WOW.

Our freedoms are being robbed day after day and nobody cares. Maybe once they take peoples TV's and bowls of chips they'll finally stand up and complain -although they'll probably be too fat to stand up.

LAND OF THE FREE BABY!!!

Totally just turned the news of this law into a quick 15k job.

Was roaming around the mall and found a kiosk that sells unlocking services. Offered to help keep them alive after the restriction takes place.

Love it.

Mashable isn't giving the full story here... it's even worse if you look fully into it.

The phone unlocking rule only applies to any phone purchased after Jan 1, 2013, so any phones you bought prior can legally be unlocked in the US

It also applies to jailbreaking and other non manufacturer/provided intended modifications to electronic devices. In one of the strangest decisions I've ever seen, they decided that it was legal to jailbreak/root/modify phones, but not other electronic devices like tablets and gaming systems. Long story short, not only can't you legally unlock your new iPhone 5, you can't jailbreak your new iPad either.

Some serious bullshit

The govt wants to know where everyone is, what they text ,what they look at. After they take the guns, then after the currency collapses they need to be able to shut off these devices as well as the internet to stop social collaboration against the communist party of merica.
