Meh, I'm impressed. I think odds are she's got an edge just because she keeps it simple stupid. Too many online marketers overcomplicate their efforts and try all sorts of trickery to get ahead. Sounds like she just spends her time relentlessly pounding out those ugly ass myspace layouts and shit. I mean, I don't like the layouts that she's designed, but I give her a lot of credit for working through what she's done.

I saw that in Fast Company. It's nothing unique or wonderful. I'm not a girl, so I'm not inspired lol.

Ashley plans to hire 4 of her friends as employees of her enterprise.

Bad bad bad... bad idea

How long do you think it will take her to lose those 4 friends and tons of hard feelings?

She might be raking it in, but she apparently hasn't learned NEVER borrow loans from friends or hire your friends.

This chick's gonna learn the hard way.

I give it 3 month MAX before her friends steal her ideas and ditch her.

Business associates may forget that she is 17, but Detroit's Wayne County Probate Court has not. She's a minor with considerable assets--"business affairs that may be jeopardized," the law reads--that need protection in light of the rift her sudden success has caused in an already fractious family. In January, a probate judge ruled that neither Ashley nor her parents could adequately manage her finances. Until she turns 18, next June, a court-appointed conservator is controlling Whateverlife's assets; Ashley must request funds for any expense outside the agreed-upon monthly budget. The arrangement, she says, affects her ability to react in a volatile industry. "It's not like I'm selling lemonade," she says. Besides, it's her company. If she wants to contract developers or employ her mother, Ashley says, why shouldn't she be able to do it without the conservator's approval?
That pisses me off. Good ol' US of A. The girl earned the money, but the government controls it for her.

Heh, that article pisses me off. I didn't even read it all. About the controlled money....that's bullshit. She incorporated the company, it's its own entity. Who gives a fuck who the director is? I have a 17 year old friend making more than his parents, and he never got hit with any BS like that. That's seriously fucked...

I also really don't like the dropping out of school thing. Baaaaad idea. I'm still in school, and I would never consider dropping out, no matter how much money I was making. School comes first. Chances are, in three years her site won't even exist anymore, and she won't even have a high school degree. Sure she'll have money, but what's she going to do the rest of her life? I know I don't plan to make IM my career, and obviously it's different for some people, but it's no reason to close all the other doors.

And hiring her friends? Come on. That's just stupid.

I've suggested to a couple people to drop out of college, but yeah, I'd never advise someone drop out of high school. Well, maybe she's getting her HS equivalency.

Didn't see the section that was mentioned about the probate court. That's absurd in most instances, but perhaps her parents might be douchebags enough that they'd try to steal money from their own kid? It's happened before (ie: child actors), so maybe it's a good thing that she now has someone controlling her actions. I'm not condoning it at all, but maybe it's not as bad as it seems.

The first google ad that comes up on the article for me is "Meet a Plump Teen". Apparentely google knows if the article is about a fat person or not :p
Awesomness...

She's fucking stupid for dropping out of highschool. What an idiot...

Dropping out of high school is only stupid if you don't do something constructive with your time. She built a multi million dollar business. I wouldn't call her stupid.

Read closer:
In January 2006, a few months after that first payday and six months before her 16th birthday, she withdrew from school. Instead of taking AP English, French, and algebra II, instead of being a straight-A sophomore at Lincoln Park High School, Ashley stayed home to nurture her budding business and take classes through an online high school. "Everybody was shocked," she says. "They asked, "Are you sure you know what you're doing?' But I had this crazy opportunity to do something different."

Are you serious? She's making $70k a month What the fuck does she need a high school degree for? That would be a complete waste of time and energy at this point in trying to run her business. And if her site is useless in 3 years, she can invest the large sums of money she is making into other enterprises. And if she really fucks up and blows all her money, she could go to college. You don't need a high school diploma to go to college.

That's like saying an athlete is stupid for going to the pros instead of staying in school. Make the money while you have that kind of an opportunity. You can always go back to school.

One more note - I'm from Detroit just like her, and there are plenty of people around here with college degrees that can't even find work (let alone just a high school diploma). Our economy around here is fucked thanks to the auto industry. Make it however you can.

The only one who is stupid is you.

Obviously if her site should fail she could easily re enter high school, but with the amount of money she made will continue to ake it's not like she will ever have to work again.

She got in very early on the myspace resource game way back in 2004. Like those who got in early on Microsoft or Cisco. Mostly luck but a little skill.
