Cop killer might be the first...US drone target?!

The guy who they wanted for setting off bombs during the 1996 Olympics (Eric Rudolph) was on the run for a couple years, too. He had similar training, and was hiding out in the mountains in TN and GA. He basically got tired of eating tree bark, went into town and started eating out of dumpsters until they caught up to him.

August of 1998 he was believed to be in the Linville Gorge in Western North Carolina. We were up in there rappelling fires out of heli's and the FBI briefings were scary as fuck. They refused to issue us firearms as well. Standard operating procedure as soon as we hit the ground was make weapons, typically a knife fibertaped to a 8' stick, along with some more spears and shit. Two people on watch all the time while four worked. Between that and the copperheads, miserable fucking times in some beautiful country.

I was a few blocks away when that bomb went off... Crazy fucking shit!

His downfall will be the fact that he is a 270 lb black dude that looks like LL Cool J's chubby cousin. Pretty hard to blend in or avoid being recognized when you have a distinctive look to you.

Damn, never heard about that guy but that's pretty badass right there.

Nonsense. Finding one highly trained individual is impossible, but finding 100 or 1000 would be far easier, and just boil down to a couple of good firefights.

You will probably say "No, I mean what if there were 100 or 1000 guys Just Like Him, all acting independently?"

Yeah, that would be scary, but it would be very unlikely. Guys like this, with that level of training and commitment are unique. More likely would be some sort of group action, and with that many people that's easy to find and put down.

I'd FAR rather deal with a group than one guy with a mission.[/QUOTE]

There are tens of thousands of men in the US with capabilities similar to Mr Dorner who are more than happy to fight the government in a similar way. The government just hasn't POed em enough yet.

When looking at the training he went through he isn't even that well trained for military standards.

The newsmedia are hyping him up way to much. He got a marksmanship medal on a rifle range with a scope from a 100yards out? WOW. How impressive that is.

He also according to media reports has a gun that can hit a target 3.2 miles away. Some world class snipers would love to get their hands on that gun.

Sick of them making him out to be a bad ass when in reality he is a coward with an inferiority complex. He is a maggot that got his hands on some guns and cowardly shot some people in cold blood. How fracking bad ass are you, shooting someones unarmed daughter because you are pissed at Daddy?

And why is it, they are only showing pictures of him in military uniform vs. his LAPD uniform?

No drone this time. They just burned him alive instead. Cheaper and more efficient than a drone strike, I guess.

Why waste a missile, when there's gas canisters right outside the cabin you can torch?

He's not the first, although he might be the first publicized one. He's a perfect story of positive PR for drones being used domestically.

In June 2011 a county sheriff in North Dakota was trying to track down three men, possibly carrying guns, in connection with some missing cows. He had a lot of ground to cover, so — as one does — he called in a Predator drone from a local Air Force base. It not only spotted the men but could see that they were in fact unarmed. It was the first time a Predator had been involved in the arrest of U.S. citizens.

"Part of what I'm gonna have to work with Congress on is to make sure that whatever it is we're providing Congress that we have mechanisms to also make sure that the public understands what's going on, what the constraints are, what the legal puh... legal parameters are, uh... and... and that's something... uh... I take very seriously."

lol What on earth is this idiot talking about?

Here's how it works...

If you're POTUS, you can do anything you want. That includes popping anyone you choose. How? Very simple. You get your lawyers to write a legal memo saying it's legal to do it.

If you have the stomach to read the Obama memo (or a semblance of it), find it here (PDF).

There. It's a done deal. You're good to go. As POTUS, you've now vested yourself with the power to kill folks...

The most extremist power any political leader can assert is the power to target his own citizens for execution without any charges or due process, far from any battlefield. The Obama administration has not only asserted exactly that power in theory, but has exercised it in practice. In September 2011, it killed US citizen Anwar Awlaki in a drone strike in Yemen, along with US citizen Samir Khan, and then, in circumstances that are still unexplained, two weeks later killed Awlaki's 16-year-old American son Abdulrahman with a separate drone strike in Yemen.

...

What has made these actions all the more radical is the absolute secrecy with which Obama has draped all of this. Not only is the entire process carried out solely within the Executive branch - with no checks or oversight of any kind - but there is zero transparency and zero accountability. The president's underlings compile their proposed lists of who should be executed, and the president - at a charming weekly event dubbed by White House aides as "Terror Tuesday" - then chooses from "baseball cards" and decrees in total secrecy who should die. The power of accuser, prosecutor, judge, jury, and executioner are all consolidated in this one man, and those powers are exercised in the dark.

Clearly, whether this happens on U.S. soil or not is a minor detail.

By the way, this isn't the first time this sort of thing has been done. (Some folks still play the Red vs. Blue shell game, so it's worth pointing this out.) Bush did it with torture. He got his lawyers to draft a legal memo saying POTUS could order folks to be strung up, cut up, electrocuted, drowned, and made to scream, regardless of guilt or due process.

Now, why would a lawyer do such a thing, presumably risking his career in the process? Because there are incentives. For example, one of the lawyers who wrote the torture memo is now a federal judge.

Lovely.

And when folks come calling to see the official memo, just mumble something about national security and send them away. From Greenwald...

But when it comes to Obama's assassination power, this is exactly what his administration has done. It has repeatedly refused to disclose the principal legal memoranda prepared by Obama OLC lawyers that justified his kill list. It is, right now, vigorously resisting lawsuits from the New York Times and the ACLU to obtain that OLC memorandum. In sum, Obama not only claims he has the power to order US citizens killed with no transparency, but that even the documents explaining the legal rationale for this power are to be concealed. He's maintaining secret law on the most extremist power he can assert.

So what about reining in the President and limiting his powers? lol That ship sailed a long time ago, right under the public's collective nose. If you're POTUS, it definitely helps that the public refuses to think critically and avoids reading like the plague. Even better when the peasants demonize those who do think and read as cranks and conspiracy theorists.

It also helps that people are confused and ignorant about economics, rights, ethics, property, and how incentives work. With a little luck, boobus Americanus will try to "fix" the problem by voting. And that's the easiest game in town to fix.
