The dollar has lost about 97% of its value since 1913. Inflation = counterfeiting. A significant portion of price appreciation is merely inflation, which leads people think they're wealthier than they actually are. Of course, when you sell an asset the gov't taxes you on the inflationary gain, even if you haven't made any money in real terms.
 
Awesome site... Did you see bitcoin and the US GDP?... The latter showed that we have lost over Half of our national output in the last 6 years now!
