Really just decided to put together a solid & reliable box that will be on 24/7.
I must be missing something. Why are you using a server chip in a workstation? Why do you need ECC RAM? I really am interested to hear what you're up to if you'll share.
This is a good 8 months old now, but 2 days humming and hawing + 2 days shipping from Amazon, done.
It's a P9X79 Deluxe, i7 3820, with 16GB of Corsair Dominator Platinum running at 2400 mhz, 2 x Intel 520 SSD, 1 x 240gb for Win 8 OS and programs, and 1 x 60gb for scratch disk, plus a few other bits and pieces.
I have a P8Z77-V Deluxe in my home theater box.

Well, I'm at a point where I want to start using my AutoCAD again and it looks like I'll be starting to learn to write ACTUAL code as well.
The last time I played a GAME on any of my PC's was back in 1999 and it was Ultima. LOL
I was going to put together an i7 3770k to O.C. with 32GB of 2400mhz Gskill. (Muskin Enhanced RedLine only went up to 1866mhz.) I was still going to use the an Asus WS board. The P8Z77 WS with a Fractal Design Define R4 case (Very similar to your Cosair case, but MUCH heavier and has the Silence Padding in it that most likely slows down air flow in the case.) and a SeaSonic X-1250 Gold Plus PSU. It would have had 2 HIS IceQ 7950 Boost cards in Crossfire. I would have gone with a Corsiar H100i (Liked the larger 3/8" flexible hoses.)
But since I'll be running quite a few VM's on this new build also, I changed my mind.
I also decided that I would rather put together a stable and reliable box that would be pretty quick on STOCK setups.
The
E3 Xeon 1275 V2 is virtually IDENTICAL (Hair bit faster actually.) to the i7 3770 with extra flexible memory instructions.
I started with 4k earmarked for the budget and was looking at the 3920k's and 2011 MB's intending to fill the 64GB of Quad channel RAM to set up a decent sized RAM DISK with plenty of room for the VM's.
But, I got the Bitcoin BUG and the budget got cut to 2.5k (j/k).
I just decided that since all the NEW stuff is coming out in the Fall and first of next year that I didn't want to put that much into a box right now. (Looking forward to the DDR4 RAM in a Quad Channel setup.)
So, I cooled my jets and started looking at the soon to be DEAD 1155 platform and figured I could do what I wanted with just 32GB of RAM.
Here's what I got:
Fractal Design Define XL R2(Shipping weight on this was/is 40lbs. The side panels are somewhere between 10 & 15lbs. I'd say.)
Xeon E3 1245 V2 ($100 cheaper and only 0.1 GHz slower at Base & Turbo clocks over the 1275 or i7 3770. I like having the on chip video and a MB that supports it in case I ever have a Video card crap out on me.)
Asus P8C216 WS (Has the 2 entry level Intel NIC's but they still free up the CPU better than the Realtek NIC's.)
Seasonic 1000 watt Platinum Plus (I figured that since SeaSonic makes the Corsair PSU's I'd just go with them.)
Kingston Unbufferd ECC 1600 (4x8) 32GB
SAPPHIRE FleX 100352FLEX-2 Radeon HD 7950 3GB 384-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card OC with Boost(It has ALL the cables outta the box for the three monitor Eyefinity without me having to buy any Display Port cables. The monitors have the DP hookups, but the resolution is only 1920 x 1200 so the DVI hookups will be just fine for them.)
Corsair Neutron GTX 480GB SATAIII SSD (Was going to get the Intel 520 Cherryville, but they no longer make them and it seems that everyone is outta stock on the 480GB drives. I then decided on the Samsung 840 Pro 512GB, but the Corsair went on sale for around $380 and I couldn't pass that up.)
I went with a
Xigmatek Dark Knight II for air cooling. I was gonna get the Noctura that you have in your pic, but I wanted to be sure I had ROOM to access ALL my DIMM slots.
I have two WD RE4 500GB SATA II drives that I'll use in a RAID 0 for data and the SSD as the OS and program drive.
I have a couple of PCIe 2.0 Video Cards that I'm thinking of sticking in it to use as direct hardware connects for the VM's. An HD 4550 and a Zotac ION GT210. This way the 7950 will be free for my host system. I know, the 7950 should be able to handle ALL my VM's just fine, But I figured I might give them a whirl anyway.
So, today my two Dell Ultra Sharp U2412M eIPS 6ms monitors should come along with some more of my build parts. I was going to get 3, but that would have been almost 62" across. Too much turning for this OLD neck. Even in Portrait mode the UP & Down would have been too much.
I decided to just get two 24" and then I'll take an Old Dell UltraSharp 17" I have and put it on the right side in Portrait mode so it will be the same height Up & Down as the two 24" in Landscape, but only 12.5" wide. Cutting my across dimension for the monitor array to 53". I'll use that smaller one for Docs & such.
I went with a 16:10 over the 16:9 because I still use CRT 19 & 20" 5:3 monitors on some of my boxes and like the extra vertical pixels.
Tomorrow I should have all my stuff here.
I might pick one of these up when they come back in stock.

The reviews for the M500 have it with about the same performance of a regular Samsung 840, but at almost 1TB for under 1k it's pretty darn tempting.
