Why Successful People Leave Their Loser Friends Behind

I think surrounding yourself with positive people that support your visions/goals is the most important thing. Whether they are successful or not, if they can see me aiming for something greater and are cool with it, they're in.

If I have to always listen to a friend making up a list of a million reasons why something won't work, I don't really bother with them as much. They just end up draining you at the end of the day.

good thread to vent

successful people can become losers any time, many just think they perpetuated this success (illusion is illusion)

good traits like keeping your word when doing business with others show more about a man than his superficial momentary succcesses

I think it's more of a social thing that people do unintentionally. Like minded people tend to flock together.

It has been said, that how "much money you make" is an average of the 3 people you hang out with the most!

Your own success also brings out the moocher in a lot of friends. I've had friends who have been with me since I was poor and when I was making money. Some of them turn into moochers, but some of them feel bad about it and tell me they don't like someone paying for everything.

It makes for a weird friendship when you hang around people who make minimum wage or can't find a job and you're paying for all the hang out activities. Once that starts to happen, hanging out with friends turns into more of an entourage of people you basically pay to hang out with you and do fun shit because they can't afford to.

I can see why some people would want get away from that and find successful friends. Seems like I had the most fun when everyone I knew was on equal playing field and we all struggled together. Once someone breaks out from the pack it just feels awkward.

I don't avoid people because they don't make money or are not successful.

But I do get rid of whiners ...

"The world OWES me this.." "The state HAS to pay for..." "Why don't I get..."

Fuck you, I am outta here.

you must live in some 'communist' country to hear that, like in western europe for example because all capitalists fled to exploit china?

I have a lot of creative friends like writers, actors and even a couple of comedians. They put a lot less importance on money than people here, and receive gratification from practicing their craft.

I put a high value on people who are amusing, interesting and supportive. I agree about the whining though. I have a low tolerance for whiners.

Jealous people I avoid at all costs.

But the real issue is that to become successful in whatever field you choose, there is a great chance that you will change and some people you have known won't grow with you. It's like your high school buddies. Once there are no more parties to go to, what do you really have in common?

I just avoid all people at all costs. Going outside is scary.

...if you surround yourself with positive people who build you up, the sky is the limit.

Yeah - that's exactly why we browse wickedfire daily. Excuse my while I try to close these never ending dickroll popups.

You keep people around who motivate you. This doesn't mean they have to be successful themselves, it just means they aren't the kind of people that drag you down.

Even someone you may consider a good friend may be in the habit of giving you six baseless reasons something won't work for every solid reason you know it will, but this attitude still sows seeds of doubt in your mind whether you know it or not, and when things get difficult, those seeds grow and occupy space where confidence should be.

It isn't any better if you have a friend who is always down on his luck. He may be as encouraging as he can be, but if you've never seen him improve anything on his own, his words are meaningless, and again seeds of doubt are sown because even though he never intended it, somewhere in the back of your mind you're thinking "if all this bad luck can happen to him, can it happen to me too?". Now you're believing in luck, forgetting all the tips and advice you've sent his way that he ignored, or made excuses for why he didn't listen to you.

There was one guy who did nothing but hang out with losers and the dregs of society and left a legacy that is still going strong nearly 2000 years after his death. Some would mark that as the highest form of success. His name was....

Jesus.

I would be more inclined to believe this statement if I could walk less than a mile in any direction without finding a crucifix with his name on it.

If he was such a great guy, then why would we be so prepared to kill him again if he came back?

Hahaha...

Actually, I have met whiners on all levels of income.

Latest (and soon to be cut out completely) is a friend of my wife.
Always, always complaining

"My boss did not congratulate me on my new pregnancy.... he OWES me that"
"My brother in law does not want to take my son to the zoo on his day off.... he OWES me that."
etc..
etc..
etc..

I have cut ties off to people like that a lot in the past. One I remember sticking out was a good school-buddy of mine.

After moving out, he spent 6 (six!) years complaining about his apartment.

Man the fuck up and move out!

Naaaah, whining is easier.
