The government’s official prediction is that white children will become a minority in 2018 and the overall white population in the U.S. will follow suit in 2043.
But the Census Bureau is now out with some alternative estimates to last year’s projections, relying on a slower rate of immigrant growth.
Under this model, whites are estimated to lose their majority in 2046, rather than 2043. And the U.S. population would not reach 400 million until after 2060, compared with official projection of 2051.
The time when minority children become the majority would be delayed one year, to 2019.
These new numbers show how economic factors and pending immigration legislation could dictate America’s demographic change.
Immigration will surpass births as the main reason for U.S. population change by midcentury.
