Gen Y Article About Why Their Lives Suck

The 'hipster' phenomenon is the perfect representation of Gen Y stupidity.

It is an direct attempt at being 'special' without actually having anything to make you special. There are no great hipster bands like other subcultures (hippie, punk, hip hop, metal even goth has more), there is no great hipster art, there is no hipster ideology or even no great antipathy.

A hipster is an empty shell of 'specialness' without anything to make them special. It is mediocre art, mediocre fashion, mediocre music etc, without any meaning except that it contrasts to those who are not hipsters (non-gen y people).
 


Every generation is the worst generation. I'll say it about the generation after mine, and that generation will say it about the generation after that. Everyone hates change, and fondly remembers "the good old days" due to the way in which we selectively remember.

It's easy to make sweeping statements, but it's dim not to realise that social media and the web can also easily improve someone's prospects if they know how to use it correctly. A smart young person can now network with CEO's, make money from blogging about something they love, and do tons of other things previous generations never had the opportunity to do. This generation is going to be the generation of the self employed and remote working.

The major catalyst in youth unemployment is the wipe out of manual jobs. Computers/robots are increasingly doing more of our paper work, manual labour and other traditional "entry level" roles. It's harder now to get a job in a company filing, prove yourself, and work up, simply because those kinds of jobs are being eliminated.

Every generation has lazy people, smart people, ambitious people, depressed people, envious people, yada yada. The only difference is that social media and the web can potentially amplify those things. Most the people I know around my age (20-25) are working hard towards something. Sure I know stoners that get nothing done, and people far too concerned about social media for their own good, too, but those people would have done all but the same if they were born decades ago, they'd have just found an alternative outlet.
 
^^^^^* My opinion on Gen Y is the same as it was the last time this thread came up. It's also summed up nicely when I say "when you're only painting with broad strokes, everything looks like shit"

To have an opinion on an entire generation is delusional, much in the same way that calling the Greatest Generation and actually believing it is delusional. Please show me proof that Gen Y as a whole is pretty lazy. You do realize you're talking about the generation that has produced the most college graduates in history, that until the 2008 crash had the lowest number of unemployed people since they developed child labor laws, and so on and so on.

There is no empirical evidence that this generation is lazy, or at least that it's any lazier than past generations. Half of this generation is still in fucking high school or below. the others are either just out of high school, or college, or are nearing 30. Do you know what the children born in the early 50's and 60's where doing at that age? Fighting in Vietnam. Protesting Vietnam. Smoking weed in the back of a van. Fucking everyone they could get their hands on. Doing as little work as fucking possible.

Know what the children born in the late 60's and early 70's were doing when they were that age? Lines of blow. Globes of crack, Smoking weed in the back of a van. Fighting black wars in jungles that no one heard about until it was a scandal. Fucking everything they could get their hands on.

Know what children of the 80's and 90's are doing now? The same fucking things.

This is generational, get off my lawn type bullshit. It's the same thing that's happened forever and it's the same thing that will always happen. It's a false sense of "when I was younger" or "my generation was" = better. It wasn't. Things and people are generally the same now as they have been for thousands of years. The only difference is perception.

You've only read about history, so you don't know that in the 1850's there were still plenty of lazy people who didn't do shit and depended on family, friends, or local governments or charities to provide them with basic needs. You only know that everyone was a hard working farmer, blacksmith, hunter, inventor, blah, blah, blah. It's the same way it's always been. The only difference is that you live in the now and can see all of the laziness that has always existed. It's not any more than at any other time. Add in the fact that it's easier to see things today than it ever has been because the entire planet is connected and there you have it.

Generational bias at it's best. And depending on what cut point you use, I'm either Gen X or Gen Y. Growing up it was always considered Gen X. Then they created Gen Y, which actually makes more sense since I was a class of 2000 kid, but it doesn't make sense that I would be lumped in with kids still being born in 2002 and later. That's a twenty year difference. That isn't a generation in today's meaning of the word. Historically it may be, but in the terms of modern day generations,two decades should most definitely be the cutoff.

All of that is to say that I have a foot in both generations and don't really identify as either, so I have no dog in this race. The entire argument is dumb and attempts to give a simple answer to a very complex societal issue.

I know I always try to solve complicated and dynamic issues with a 3 point bullet list and by telling people that they're just lazy. That always helps.

I am really getting tired of everyone throwing Socrates and his famous rant around as some kind of proof that there are no good or bad generations. Could it simply not be that the generation after Socrates was just crap? Ever consider that maybe for some reason that post Socrates generation were lazy bitches?

The worst generation ever is the baby boomers.

They have all but destroyed the west in their absurd egoism and ideological madness.

They brought us multi-culturalism, welfare states, feminism, socialism, bankrupted nations, destroyed the nuclues family, destroyed the real estate market so that no young family now can afford a home.

They are by far the worst generation ever.

This is pretty spot on. I know a girl who finished her undergrad (earning what we refer to as a strippers degree) nowhere near the top of her class and instead of doing an extra year to bump up her grades to compete locally she chose to fuck off to England for easy admission to law school.

I pointed out that going to a low tier law school would not do her any favors employment wise when she, you know, actually had to get a job. She gave me a huge speech about how she was different.

Law is pretty damn competitive and the firms that pay the type of six figure salary she expects want the best of the best. To put this in perspective the cutoff for U of T law is 97% and even then its competitive. That's the pool the good high paying firms not in the middle of bumfuck nowhere get to choose from. That is who she is competing against.

Now why would they even consider someone with a degree from a C school who obviously fucked off to another country just so they could take advantage of lower admission requirements?

Delusional. Sad part is i know 10-15 other females just like her.

I sort of feel bad for the older part of Gen X.

They've been living in the shadows for the baby boomers for all their life and the boomers have generally refused to step down gracefully and let the next generation take over.

When they finally do resign from the throne, Gen Y and Millenials will be going hard for that same power vacuum.
 
Who really cares about gen y being unhappy I find that this makes it easy to find hotties that are dtf its so easy today. Think outside the box

This reminds me about how my ex-girlfriend thought she could become an astronaut if she really tried. I blame her parents for never telling her any of her ideas were bad.

Have you ever thought at any time maybe she doesn't want to become another drone attorney? Maybe she doesnt want to work for someone else at a firm for X years only to prove herself for partnership later on?

I know several attorneys in my home town that were not top 97% of their class, not very bright in college/high school, and some of the laziest bastards in the community, but out do everyone else just fine financially.

Get in where you fit in. If she can easily obtain the same degree with less work/less credentials, why you hating on her?

The fact she went to law school already puts her miles ahead of most other self entitled GenY in my book.

That's a bit harsh, isn't it? For example, a few weeks back one of my sister-in-laws posted a photo on Facebook of her 10 year old son making crepes. I guess he got up earlier than everyone, decided to be a nice guy, and make his mom and little sister some crepes for breakfast. He's only 10, and I bet 95% of the people on WF don't even know how to make crepes.

I could go on with shit like that for 30 pages. For example, I bet when it comes to outdoor survival, all three of my nephews would put the majority of WF to shame.

I'm sure the up-and-coming generation will get by just fine, one way or another. There's little if any help coming from their parents though, and they're going to be forced to learn to blaze their own way in life. No help with a car, tuition payments, books, nothing.

And since when does white suburban-raised chicks exclusively represent Generation Y? That is 100% backwards.

Generation Y, and this includes all genders no matter how swarthy, idolizes white chicks and Kobe Bryant.

I brought all this up. She thinks she'll make partner at a top tier Bay st (our version of wall street) firm by 35. She wants bentley money. Not used porsche/bmw money.

Its not the same degree. Law is an old boys club. The seal on your degree matters.

Not to mention in order to come home and practice law you have to write between 8 and 11 pretty hard exams. I'm not sure where you are from but up North it is a bit different.



Oh and she has never worked for anyone but her parents. I encourage her to try working for other people or to volunteer at law related jobs even before the articling chase comes into the picture. No dice.

also, we can always find outliers in every example. Can you be 110% positive he did everything as himself? Your post kinds of assumes this. Did he go to the grocery and buy the eggs? Did he mix it all himself with the electric blender? Or did he simply stand at the oven and pour the batter while Mom took a shot of it and gave him the credit ( which is something Moms LOVE to do BTW ). All you did was point out an outlier. All data sets have them. For example, I know some pretty lazy ass entitled Gen X and Baby Boomers and some true hustlin Gen Y'ers.

However, as a group you need to see the whole forest and not just the trees.

Being "up north" ( unless you mean Canada ) has nothing to do with it. Each state has its own rules and regulations. Whats true for Maine regarding what it takes to be an attorney is not the same for New York, Delaware, or even Texas.

Passing the Bar is 1 step, but writing essays isn't true in every state. It has nothing to do with North or South.
 
I will just point out, once again, that all of this is a retarded discussion. It's the same conversation our parent's parents had about them. And their parent's parents had about them. It will never stop. When the economy sucks old people blame the current generation, young people blame the previous generations. Where oh where have we seen this before.

Oh yeah, here. But better yet, go to your local library, dig through the microfiche and read all the newspaper articles going back a hundred years about how "this" generation is lazier, more incompetent, dumber, etc than "our" generation.

Maybe if boomers weren't losing their memory and if more gen Xers had read newspapers and magazines growing up instead of playing with toys we wouldn't be having this conversation yet again. But we are. And we'll continue having it because people always want to look back on the "good ol' days" and have difficulty admitting what a fuck up they were in the past.

So gen Yers, you might as well start writing your pieces about the next generation now. Really you can say basically the exact same thing as people are saying now. Use cellphones, video games, and Generation Y or Millennials as a placeholder and replace with whatever the new technology and name for the next generation is. By the time you're 50 there'll be a market for it and you'll have a jump on all of those other lazy and incompetent people within your generation.

Forgot to mention this a bit ago...

Id like to hire him, if he can do it all himself.

I wake up around 10am, id like to have some choc. chip crepes with some hashbrowns. I'll pay $10 per hour for it.
