Look at the shit women read...

Well, I was reading up on my hero, Justin Bieber and his latest haircut, and this article popped up as related.

One of my sister-in-laws posted it to FB.

gonna leave this here to help bring the gay level of this thread down a bit

Thinking about this... so there's 8.8 billion habitable planets in the Milky Way. Obviously, I'm sure some of them have life, and it doesn't take a genius to figure that out.

So does this mean we're like the outcasts of the universe, or what?

Out there in the Milky Way it's all happening, people are planet hopping, sharing technology, have such as vast amount of unlimited resources it's almost unfathomable, and so on. And we're out here in the middle of nowhere, floating around the sun. Is that about right?

Precisely the shit women don't read.

We are the bad neighborhood, the Somalia of the universe, the place where innocent and unwary tourists end-up dead, the planet of the barbarians. I hope they give us enough time to sort-out our shit.

The place where Somalians feel right at home, those smug douchebags.

Well I'll be fucked, we are in the milky way. I never knew that. Bloody public education. I was always taught it was some far off distant universe, but apparently, we're right in the middle of the bloody thing. Learn something new every day I guess.

And to help get the gay out of this thread, check this out:

8.8 billion habitable Earth-size planets exist in Milky Way alone - NBC News.com

8.8 billion habitable earth-like planets found in the Milky Way. Now that's fucken cool. There's only 7 billion of us, so looks like we all get our own planet!

He confused habitable planets with planets being in the habitable zone.

There are at least a couple dozen things that have to go down for life to Form on its own. Assume a 1 in 10 chance for each of them, which is probably optimistic. The probability for all of them happening are 10^-30 per Planet. 10^-9 would correspond to 1 in a billion.

This holds true for Earth-like life. But as the great drunkard and philosopher Alan Watts says "Like an Apple Tree apples, the Universe peoples." Carbon ain't the only game on the market!

Also, completely unrelated to anything, but I just saw this on reddit and have to post it:
