Catastrophic insurance doesn't cover much though, does it? What about chronic problems, were you saving in a separate savings fund for them? Or were you just winging it hoping that a special diet would defeat genetics?
If it was the latter, that's exactly why Obamacare was brought in. Because people claiming they were being "responsible" were actually basing their finances on daft hopes and delusions, not saving or being responsible at all, and then when reality hit, were toddling up to hospitals and expecting the taxpayer to pay.
Don't you get it - you arn't being made to subsidize women, people with pre-existing conditions etc. Obamacare is designed to make sure everyone else doesn't have to subsidize you when the inevitable illness hits. When you get ill, you'll just be drawing out what you paid in. You only think it's a bad deal because you are convinced that you will never get ill - but what is that belief based on?
Nobody on this thread has answered my question about family history. Are you all really from perfectly healthy families who don't have a history of heart disease, diabetes, cancers, or anything at all chronic? Really? It's true there are some families like that, but they seem to live in southern France. For everyone else, illness is inevitable. Genetics are destiny.

Do you know why women pay more for health care than men? Because they use it more. That's why it costs more to insure women than it does to insure men. So by having them pay the same, BY DEFINITION that means men are subsidizing women's healthcare. Math is a funny thing once you learn it.
Next you're going to tell us that people who buy BMW's are being discriminated against because they pay more for their cars than people that buy a Ford Focus. All people that buy cars should pay the same, it's only fair. Even people that don't need a car, fuck it.
It's part of the pooled nature of insurance. You all put your money into a pot and then you take it out when you need it. There are always going to be cross-subsidies - the young subsidizing the old, people from healthy families subsidizing people with unhealthy genes and so on. That's insurance for you.
You don't have to insure - you can self-insure by setting up a savings fund as described a few posts up.
What is so interesting is that nobody is doing it - they're all relying on "special magical diets" to keep healthy. Even though most of the claims put out by the diet industry since the year dot have proved to be false. The most reliable indicator of your future health is your parents health and your grandparents health.
As for your analogy about cars - here's the difference. Everyone gets sick and everyone dies.
Claiming that you are on a magical diet and therefore won't get sick - or claiming you'll be happy to die without treatment when you do get sick, is so much crap. What will happen is simply that you'll make yourself a burden on everyone else in a desperate bid to stay alive.
Obamacare is trying to solve the tragedy of the commons - where idiots who think they're invincible and don't need to save and don't need comprehensive insurance, suddenly get sick and try to sponge off everyone else. He's trying to force them to face the reality of their lives that they will get ill and they need to provide for it either through comprehensive insurance or saving.
A lot of people preferred to have catastrophic insurance since they know statistically (97%ish for males <40) they'll be healthy for many years to come unless, well, a catastrophic event occurs, at which point they're covered. Do you know why people liked those plans? Because there was a very small chance that they would ever need extensive medical care until they got older and either changed plans or got in the Medicare program, and insurance companies priced them in a way in which they could make a profit while paying out for the rare catastrophes.
This is the crux of the issue, and a visual representation of liberal ideology. Liberals think people are idiots who need the government to tell them what to do for their own good, ignoring the obvious fact that government is in fact, people. People are idiots - let's have other people make them do things they don't want to.
Some of us happen to think that many people are in fact idiots, but that they deserve the respect of being allowed to make their own decisions and living their own lives how they see fit without someone like you telling them what they need to do. But then again, we're idiots so what do we know.
If the idiots were not impacting other people, no doubt everyone would be content to let idiots be idiots.
But they were having an impact, weren't they? They claimed like BigWill above that they'd be happy to die without treatment if they hadn't provided themselves - but when the crunch came, they were rushing to emergency and getting someone else to pick up the bill. Now they are contributing - problem solved. And other parts of the Obamacare bill, such as amendments to Medicare for govt to pay per patient rather than per procedure should cure a lot of abuses in the system due to people being kept ill in order to keep those govt cheques coming through. The burden on the taxpayer will fall - isn't that what you all wanted?
I don't know who the fuck "you all" is, but all I know is my insurance premiums went up 65% because of this shit. Millions of people have seen premiums increase and millions more have had policy cancellations - so can you explain again to me how this is cheaper? Plus you're adding a layer of government bureacracy, all of whom are paid salaries out of taxes, so guess what happens to taxes.
But I get it - higher taxes and higher premiums means I should be happy because some irresponsible cunt in Atlanta can get a cheaper abortion. Awesome.
It will be cheaper for the govt. Essentially what he's done is shift the burden from the govt onto the individual. Your premiums have gone up - but the money the govt sends to emergency depts in hospitals will go down, as they won't be dealing with so many uninsured any more. The money sent for medicare will go down too, with the per-patient rather than per-procedure rule.
It's not how I'd have set it up - I'd have set up a single payer system paid for through general taxation, say flat 3% on everyone. That would have achieved the same end and been cheaper for govt and individual. But I understand insurance companies were unhappy about that solution.
In a way it's a pity that Truman didn't bite the bullet and set up a single payer system back in the 1940's before the whole health insurance industry got going and dug in.
But you are where you are. The govt wanted to shrink the amount they pay for health and Obamacare was one way of achieving it, by forcing the individual to pay for it themselves, to get round the tragedy of the commons. If it wasn't Obamacare it would have been something else - you couldn't carry on the way you were.

This is the circle Unarmed was referring to. They would not have an impact if they were not allowed to have an impact, ie. if all these subsidies and other nonsense were scrapped and the idiots were forced to fend for themselves.
The only reason they have an impact is because "we" allow them to continue to do so, by saying "hey, you should be responsible for yourself and you should save your own money. but oh look you got sick and you didn't save, so don't worry about it, we'll help you out." It reminds me of some loser sucking up to his girlfriend, trying to set boundaries and such and when she doesn't abide by them he just retreats and continues to let her do whatever she wants anyway.
