Shelves should be stocked by robots, floors should be swept by robots, checkout should all be self checkout with 1 person monitoring 4 to 6 stations. Employees that work the floor should be making next to nothing for a mindless job.
Sadly, we do not yet live in a Jetsons world.
Assuming that making the transition from blood and tissue to gears and chips would require considerable testing and expense, let's preclude robots as an option for now.

This book is short and fantastic...
I have read it several times, and plan to read it again and again. If you dig deep into economics and start testing things, you'll inevitably find yourself getting trapped in theoretical cul-de-sacs. Economics In One Lesson is like a compass. It gets you back to home base so you can start anew.

If you've never read the book, and you rarely spend time thinking about economics, go through it without thinking too deeply about the individual chapters. Just let it simmer like a pot roast. Then sit down, and read each chapter carefully. Try to poke holes in Hazlitt's reasoning. See if you can do so while remaining logically consistent.
It's a fun exercise.
With time, you will want to punch Krugman in the throat every time he posts on his blog.
