Viralnova.com potentially up for grabs

Her assumptions were apparently pretty good.

he said the same to me.

does anyone still run adsense sites? have some comparable CPMs to give us?

jesus, just doing the math here, maybe he is earning that CPM.

his revenue is 'well in' the six figures a month. let's say $200k a month. and he claims 100 million 'visits' in December. is a visit a unique visitor or an impression? we'll assume an impression. so that does work out at about $2 cpm. fair enough. what a baller.

no homo, he truly is in an inspiration to us at WF. just one guy with no venture funding, balling out of control on a site less than 12 months old.

He's making way more than $200k per month from ViralNova. I can tell you that with absolute certainty.

$200k month? You are WAY under estimating. Alexa rank is 152 US. Think about that for a sec.

You also have to realize his demographic that visits the site. CPM is going to vary a lot depending on the visitors. It's not some shitty game site with kids with no $$.

I just find it funny how he doesn't want to bother opening an office with staff and wants to sell instead. Why would anyone drop 1-2M $ on a viral news site? And why would anyone not keep a business if its stable that is earning 200k$ a month with almost zero overhead. He just wants to cash out before his earnings drop 90% overnight after a FB update :)

Not really dude, it's not the best business model but whatever Facebook does you can't stop people from sharing so the share will exist.

Will answer that for you. Because someone can make it a brand, you have the numbers, you don't have the brand but that can easily be done by the right guy. And if you transform that numbers into a brand like Buzzfeed or Upworthy then that will mean tens of millions of dollars.

Also, the guy has experience and he sold godvine.com for 4 mil before starting with viralnova. I'd suggest you guys start learning instead of talking about Scott or viralnova, as easy as it seems is not easy for many.

Whoever buys the site will seriously regret it. The entire business model is a few tweaks by Facebook and co away from crashing down. Eventually people have got to tire of these 'viral' list/image based sites too. Feels a lot like Groupon

I have a really great quote from someone about the right time to sell a business on the tip of my tongue, but for the life of me can't remember who it is or the exact words. It was along the lines of there being three situations someone should sell a business.

He's a very smart guy selling now, anyhow. There's going to be huge competition in the coming months for these generalist viral content sites and these types of sites struggle in terms of building a memorable brand. People will keep clicking the headlines, mind you. An unfortunate quirk of psychology.

He could learn a thing or two from Tavin in terms of monetisation before he sold, mind you. Viral stories, what about viral products as an inner section? Create blog posts about interesting products and get them affiliate links in (just keep them off the homepage). Perhaps the "potential" will get him a higher valuation though. Of course the other route to go is the Buzzfeed route and promoting other people's content with the "featured partner" model. In fact, I'd do both.

I've never been in a position like Scott's but I can understand why he wants to just sell for a couple mil. He knows that it is probably at it's peak and that it's time to cash in. It's actually refreshing to see someone trying to sell at the peak and make as much money as possible.

In regards to your monetization ideas, it really doesn't sound like Scott wants to deal with any of that.

At this point, do you think if he sold the site to someone with experience that they could successfully implement the above ideas, grow traffic, and increase revenues even if facebook's algo changes?

That's exactly the worry. Sell while the selling is good. Doing what he is doing with ViralNova is no more reliable than depending on a network of made for adsense sites. They both lend themselves to being destroyed overnight by either algorithms or getting hacked from adsense.

He has no shortage of ideas, so if anything, I'm sure he's just bored and wants to enjoy some of that money that he has finally. Some people just like hatching ideas and sending them on their merry way like teens entering into adulthood, ya know? He's probably bored and has a million ideas in his head of what his next big thing will be and has no time to pursue them.

I'm just pretty shocked people believed it that quick. I guess I just wasn't prepared. Thanks for the checklist.

I cant believe it either. It seemed pretty obvious you were taking the piss. Ah well fuck it, just be sure to remember the checklist next time :zzwhip:

Can anyone confirm whether or not he had ads running on the site from day one, and if not does anyone know when he added the ads?
