Anyone use a Linux OS?

I'm sick of Windows, and I refuse to upgrade to Vista EVER! So, I was looking at Freespire and Ubuuntu (sic?). Anyone have any experience with either of those operating systems?

I like Ubuntu, I think I might format and switch my desktop to Ubuntu (I use my laptop for mostly everything, anyway.)

What should I look for in a Linux OS? There seems to be a ton of them out there. What makes one better than the others?

I'd really like to go Linux, but the array of OS's kind of has me baffled.

UBUNTU god i fucking love it. if you are a programmer, youre gonna love it, even more. you can get the fancy, eye-candy, easy to use regular edition or go server edition for a little more on your ownishness. if you are a programmer, you are really going to enjoy using the computer again because you get to constantly flex a little programming muscle in order to setup things, configure things, and generally do shit on the computer.

its like driving automatic all your life then switching to manual transmission. the same old experience becomes more fun again.

Just switched to a MAC recently and I love it! Used Windows for over 10 years and finally gave into MAC.

I just built an Ubuntu LAMP server for development work on a new project. Overall it was an alright experience. The world of Linux is waaaay too technical. I'm a halfway smart guy and have been around computers my entire life and I was pretty well over my head. I finally realized that Samba was the trick I was looking for - but man was it well hidden in all the different setup options.

Anyways, moral of the story is that yes I'm happy to run development and server work on Linux, but there's no chance I'd become all-Linux.

Ubuntu is great its probably the easiest Linux distro to get to grips with, you can also run it live off the cd without installing if you just want to play around.

honestly I wouldn't do it. You're going to think it's great at first, until you need to install something or do anything but the basic stuff. When you're excited to do something and you have to spend 2 hours looking up linux commands it gets old fast. I've ran SuSe and a few others, I think I liked fedora the best. I always end up switching back to windows though because how much of a pain in the ass linux is.

To be honest, Vista isn't all that bad. It took me a day to get running smoothly, but now I actually like it. It runs well, and I'm starting to like some of the features. The nifty sidebar is actually pretty cool, I can monitor all my email addresses etc.

I'm afraid my experience is very similar to this. I can handle a dedicated server and everything, but it's at the very top of the things I don't like doing. When I'm working at my computer at home I want to actually be doing something useful rather than look through (and try and interpret) bloody linux man pages.

I appreciate that it's some peoples' idea of fun but I'm getting quite stressed just thinking about it.

If you know how to manage Linux or any Unix like OS, and for that it needs some years of experience, you will NEVER EVER switch back to windows.

Like getting rich with SEO, nothing is for free, you need the ambition to learn it and then you'll profit.

Most people argue with something like above "I want to do something useful, not just read man pages and docs" well.. if you want to digg a hole, you could either start imedeately by hand everytime, or you learn how to automate things and create a machine that does it and of course, when building this machine you cannot start right away, but you'll have it a lot easier after building it.

A Windows-Linux comparison is totally useless, linux is as flexible as you are, it does not limit you in any way, you can do whatever you want.
But in order to get these features you have to learn it, so if youre lazy, Windows is the way to go

Ubuntu is really nice. I know a few dif people who run that as their main OS.

ifyou use it for work & internet, there won't be much trouble. However, not all HW works with Linux. Also, there is are lot of program doesn't have a linux version (not even itune), you might need to install VM to run those program
you also need time to learn command. ubuntu is similar to windows but they are not the same so it take time to get use to
Don't try it on laptop though
