Internet Marketing Just got Worse Today (Net Neutrality Rules Approved)

Wow, really? I saw on Reddit they switched to automated but wasn't sure. I called before and someone actually picked up (didn't refer me to anyone though).

Yeh, in fact when I called they had a message that specifically said, "if you're calling about new rules, hang up and email"

It's not over yet, I expect there will be a massive pushback now that something has happened to disrupt people's lives, but fuck this sucks.

Here's code to throttle your site, in attempt to draw attention to what's happening:

Clever idea, but only going help if some big brands get involved.

Bah this won't disrupt anyone's lives but ours. As long as the general public can get Netflix, Amazon, and Facebook no one will give a shit. Those 3 can easily pay for priority and would prefer another barrier for entry.

Not saying you're completely wrong, but Netflix did come out against this. It will probably result in price increases and piss off plenty of people.

At the risk of sounding like a downer, I don't think this is the straw that breaks the camels back. Maybe if Netflix stood up originally to Comcast instead of paying the fine and people actually had a disruption in their service. People's main sites are like Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Netflix etc.

If people are still being entertained/distracted I don't see anything happening.

People I talk to who are not tech-savvy have 0 clue this is happening.

Edit:
Chesire said the same thing above. If I was a big biz (I'm not because CEOSam never delivered links) I would almost prefer paying a small fee that I didn't have before so I'm faster than everyone else (or have the same speed and everyone is slower). It's actually a benefit for them - just much harder for people like us making the jump to where they are.

I'm trying to figure out how this would directly affect a smaller internet based business.. I'm not up to par on all this shit.

Yeh, it's really a matter of marketing, is it not? There are a lot of people that get it, while the majority are clueless. But it's really about selling how bad it is to the average dipshit.

I think the scariest thing is that this is probably going to wind up back in the hands of Congress who will use it as an opportunity to pass some draconian SOPA style legislation, rather than trying to fix the neutrality issue.

I agree with this to a point, but Comcast is going to use this to try and level the playing field for cable TV, so if fees are high enough that the average person decides it's worthwhile to get cable again, or Netflix has to raise fees from $10ish a month to cable-level fees, they'll lose massive business. They lost a lot of customers when they raised their fees from $5.99 a month to $9.99 or whatever it was... (enough that they changed their plan to allow for DVD-opt out plan that was a few bucks less per month)

You pay Comcast, TWC, Verizon, AT&T and every other 2 bit internet provider in the country a monthly or yearly fee and they won't throttle your site down to dial up speeds for their customers. Pretty simple.

Netflix came out against it and then paid Comcast a hefty sum to keep the data flowing a few months later. Their customers will grumble over an extra $2/mo for about a week and then they'll forget.

These fucking rules have been green-lit

because

Tom Wheeler is a cable lobbyist

because

money has thoroughly corrupted our government.

I'm highly irked by this latest down-our-throats bullshit, but it's just the latest symptom of the actual problem: money in politics.

Lawrence Lessig has created an organization and SuperPAC that, unlike basically any other, intends to address the problem, not the symptoms.
