Judging by this article, moving to Mexico seems like the right way to do it: The American Poker Frat of Playa del Carmen
Poker's just some fun shit I do on the side, but the port security bill wrecked my income stream overnight by killing Neteller. Please do expand on that brother, either openly or via my PM.

Unless you live in a state that has legalized play (NV or NJ or whatever else there is these days) you're better off just hitting up the casino.
The legalized sites in NV aren't bad... I mean, the software is terrible and full of bugs like it's 1998 again, but the players overall are absolutely fucking terrible. Don't expect to sit in any games above 1NL ($100 buyin) though. The bigger games never run because people can just hit the casino and play against drunks.

Nice to see some poker playaz here. Poker players & affiliates have a lot in common. I played in college pretty seriously for income. Then I got a job in marketing when the shit hit the fan. Black friday took a shit on my rakeback biz as well.
Bovada seems decent, I messed around a while back on there. I still have buddies who are still in it full swing tho, they mostly have just switched to live poker (in the mean time as legislation catches up). They'll migrate to where they need to go - vegas, cali, or whatever area is having a hot swing of games for a period of time.

I played on Bovada and Americas CardRoom before legalized came to Nevada, both were pretty much absolute shit based on either not being able to tell who you were playing against (Bovada) or ACR ripping your ass up on their 'TheBeast' competition which was basically double rake on all tables.
Played on both for a short stint and instantly quit the second I realized how much they were reaming the players and making their games unprofitable for people who actually attempt to do well at it.
The competition is tough, and it's a completely different game. I have local poker, and it's a much richer experience. For me, it's a lot more fun to watch people play and take advantage of it. See "Caro's book of poker tells."
The advantage to online poker (for me) is that you get to play a ton of hands, and hone your math skills in ways that can't happen so fast in person. Online, I view it as taking advantage of peoples' mathematical mistakes. In person, those mistakes are amplified.
I enjoyed the anonymity (I was playin some HU). Everybody bumhunts so hard now its nice to just sit and play someone without worrying about stats.
If you want to play for fun with real money - Bovada or ACR (but see Michael's answer). Run away from Merge if they're still online.
If you want an income, get good and play live or move to NJ or Nevada for small winnings or Canada for better bucks.
I'd advise checking out one of the local tours - WPT, MSPT, Heartlands, etc. There's normally fun and experience to be had in those.
