Just remember, cops get out of bed every day and goto work with the sole intention of arresting "bad guys". More arrests = better record = more pay = better life in their eyes.

They're not there to be your friends (unless you're helping them catch a "bad guy").

The problem is they think everyone they come into contact with is a bad guy. Have you ever talked to a cop? Just ask them if they think people are honest.

Cops have their heads filled with "officer safety" bs all day long. There was 1 bank robbery 20 years ago where one department was out gunned, and now they all need "combat gear" and high powered weapons to protect themselves. Why do they need to wear black and or super dark blue uniforms? For camoflauge? Lol It is worn for intimidation.

I could go on and on. Officers that do bad, need to be punished. When a cop gets killed, they shouldnt be allowed to go and hunt and murder the suspect (Christopher Dorner).

You want better cops? Eliminate the high risk "no knock" warrants. There are much much better ways to handle these non violent drug offenders. And 2, all officers should have as part of their uniform, a video camera that live streams to a public website. If the situation is to dangerous for a live stream, go ahead and put it on a 24 hour delay. This video stream must not be controlled by the department. Implement these 2 basic changes and you will eliminate 99% of the problems people have with the police.

100% this.

Not only to protect the public from police brutality, but to protect the cops from bullshit charges of harassment. There is no good reason not to have cops videotaped all the time. They are a special class of citizens with special rules that allow them to kill, assault, rob etc., so they should be subject to complete and total surveillance.

Going back on topic... the TL;DR of the video is that there can be no good from saying anything to the police without consulting a legal person as it will be used to convict you.

The police warn you of this and then will proceed to informally chat to you with the aim of getting a confession or admission out of you (which doesn't have to be recorded AFAIK). Naturally a lot of people open up to them as you don't want to be rude and being evasive is naturally seen in most parts of society as being synonymous with guilt.

It isn't though.

When you're at school or at work if you're smart as soon as you make a mistake you admit to right away and explain yourself with 90% of the time this leading to a more desirable outcome.

"Speaking" i.e making informal comments about a police matter without an attorney will likely have a 99.9% undesirable outcome.

/Thread.

Knowing this will go a long way in resolving 99% of interactions with the police.

If police expect you to be guilty they will also expect you to act like it.

Don't act guilty, even if you are, and generally you'll walk.

Who looks guilty, a guy in a business suit or a gang banger.

We're marketers, fucking selling the police on your innocence.

Doesn't work in all cases, but most of the time it will.

Of course this wont work in the case of no-knock, but then at least your family can sue after they shoot you 56 times and leave you to die on your doorstep.

The police warn you of this and then will proceed to informally chat to you with the aim of getting a confession or admission out of you (which doesn't have to be recorded AFAIK).

This tactic can be used against the police as well. Start chatting informally with the police when your stopped by them, don't wait for them to initiate the conversation and it changes their mindset.

Think about this for a second...

Cops enforce laws without a law degree; they have the power to shoot and kill.

But you don't see me walking into a hospital and operating on people without a medical degree.

Yet BOTH of those situations involve life and death situations.

In at least one precinct where this was done, there was a drop in force by 60% percent.

What Happens When Police Officers Wear Body Cameras - WSJ

There's no reason why every cop in the country shouldn't have this.

Watch the show 48 Hours on A&E. If the cops can't get a confession, the perp typically walks out the door, or has a much lower sentence than if he confesses. Cops are desperate for confessions as the CSI world is really not that effective.

I have told my teenage boys, keep your mouth shut, ask for a lawyer, and call me, even if the cop is your best friends Dad.

The body cameras are a step in the right direction....but the fucking pigs have the ability to turn them off on their own. Not going to be very effective when they can just disable the camera and claim there was a "malfunction" without any recourse.

Cameras are a problem dressed up as a solution. To be sure, they'll reduce the number of incidents involving abuse and excessive force. But they'll introduce other problems. Cops who are forced to wear cameras and keep them on at all times will:

- become less inclined to provide the "service" they were "hired" to provide (too dangerous if they can't use force)
- become increasingly resentful of their "customers," seeing them as obstacles or worse, enemies ("these assholes don't trust me and want to watch my every move.")
- learn to tamper with the feeds

The only viable long-term solution has two components: competition and voluntary exchange. If cops and their employers were forced to win and retain customers, they'd be more inclined to behave well and deliver the results their customers want.

Like today, poor behavior on the part of cops would be reported to their employers. The difference is that their employers would have an incentive to promptly curb the behavior or fire the offending cop(s). They would also have an incentive to apply stringent controls during the hiring process to weed out malcontents. Failing to do either of those things would spur customers to bolt to the competition.

Forcing cops to wear cameras only seems like a solution. But it will cause other problems and move us further away from fixing the deep-seated issues that are inherent in today's law enforcement.
