No hype for the big fight tonight?

What boxing used to be:

Hagler vs Hearns Round 1 - YouTube

Hagler, Hearns, Leonard, and Duran - all had the skills we saw last night, but would step into the ring with the idea of knocking out opponents.

Last night was predictable and boring. Mayweather telling people he's better than Ali. Cut him his check and pull the mic, please.

Yeah Mayweather definitely isn't in the class of the 4 guys you mentioned. I do think he's a good defensive fighter though, which counts for something. Tommy Hearns is a Detroiter and I still see him at events occasionally. You can see the damage that boxing has done to him, he just shuffles around stopping for pics and shit. People still call him champ and love him but he just walks around in a daze.

I prefer beef!

Please explain this...anyone...please. Thank you.

Mayweather's talented, but he's boring as fuck to watch. Like everyone else in this thread, and the majority of people that watched this fight in the world, I was also disappointed. Yeah it's boxing, but it's also relatively shitty entertainment.

Truly entertaining boxing involves guys that have balls and want to rip the other guy's head off. They go directly at their opponent with the intent of putting him in a grave. They don't prance around looking for easy "points" that will help them win on the cards. They fuck people up.

Also, the reason boxing is dying is not only because of the UFC, but also because the U.S. hasn't had any significant "greats" in the past decade. Ever since the Eastern Europeans took over the heavyweight division, we haven't been able to compete.

With all that said, here's another video of what entertaining boxing looks like:

None of that pussy shit. Just go in and fuck the other guy up.

Mike Tyson Knockouts Collection - YouTube

None of that pussy shit. Just go in and fuck the other guy up.

4:34 is a classic example of how not to fight against Mike. Trevor Berbick and most of the other < 90 second knockouts made the same mistake. Mike would come out with his dial turned up to 11, even if the opponent is covered, those punches hurt. When he was throwing hooks, he would often hit them with his elbow. Then they think the only way to keep him off is to come straight at him. Mike would duck and throw a body shot so hard and fast it made the opponent drop his hands, then it was all over.

I remember as soon as those fights were done, Mike would immediately go over to check on the guy to make sure he was all right, and for the ones that could still stand up, wanted to give them a big hug.

Casual fans love watching fights and knockouts, not boxing. That's why the heavier weight classes are the most popular.

Klitschko could be compared to Mayweather in that he's also in a league of his own skills-wise and gets a bad rep for being boring. Where they differ is that Klitschko actually seems like a half decent bloke and Floyd is a world-class troll. The reason so many people pay so much money to watch his fights is in the hope that they'll get to see him knocked out.

At this point it's not going to happen, he's got one fight left on his contract and one after that to beat Rocky Marciano's record. One legitimate criticism against Floyd (and the sport generally) is the cherry picking of fights. Be interesting to see what fights get made.. Other than that say what you wanna say about him, but he's one of the best defensive boxers there has ever been and is going to retire on his own terms, not brain damaged, like he said he would. Posted this here before but:

If you like watching the old school toe-to-toe wars you should check out the Eubank-Benn-Watson fights from this side of the Atlantic. Not comparing the level of fighters to the names you've mentioned, but those were all exciting, scrappy 'wars' from a similar era/weight.

If you want to see a modern fighter who bangs, check out GGG. Ricky Hatton said of him recently: "Imagine finding him in bed with your missus.. You'd tuck him in."

sorry for lack of hype I was so fucking into this fight, then charter dropped the ball had to drive to back up location to watch it at dudes house. great fight I enjoyed every fucking second. Anyone hating on Floyd really DOES NOT KNOW SHIT ABOUT BOXING. Dana White has sold everyone on the shit stain hater train a sack of lies to make you think that two doofuses should get into a ring and go "toe to toe" and damage each others brains instead of taking just a tiny bit of time out to explain to you that what Floyd Mayweather does is REAL FUCKING BOXING, THE SWEET SCIENCE, THE ART OF HITTING AND NOT GETTING HIT, MAKE HIM MISS MAKE HIM PAY. You have been scammed. Enjoy eating your shit sandwich.

Dumbass, I won't waste my time saying what others already said above me, but I have "disdain" for Mayweather while also recognizing he's a great technical boxer.

He's managed to be a great boxer, while also being the most boring in the history of the sport. Add to that the fact that he pretty much possesses every undesirable human quality. He's unintelligent (can't read), boisterous, jealous (UFC comments), beats his family, egotistical (thinks he's greater than Ali), and I'm pretty sure I'm missing about 10 others.

His comments about not being able to read because he is a boxer make me cringe every time. You have hundreds of millions of dollars. Get your GED expand your vocabulary and stop coming across as a simpleton.

Sure it worked great for Tyson until someone took him into deep water in the later rounds, and then, he lost, unlike Mayweather who is undefeated and has never even been knocked down, much less knocked out.

You must love watching toughman competitions.

Your admiration of Mayweather is duly noted. I'm sure the sport of fencing has some fantastic technicians, you may be interested in following that sport, too.

In the meantime you better believe that I, for one, will tune into a toughman competition before I do another Mayweather** fight.

People shelled out $100 to watch a shit fight and what appeared to be some kind of post-Oscar party, just an unending parade of celebrities. So special.

** Went to twitter for a feed, watched start of fight. Unlike Manny, I couldn't go the full 12.

It's not an admiration of Mayweather, it's an understanding and appreciation of boxing. I would have been just as happy to see Mayweather KOed by Pacquiao. It would certainly make things more interesting in a sense.

Wait, are you trying to compare welterweight vs heavyweight? There is a world of difference in what you can get away with when you're fighting a 145 pound man rather than a 230 pound man.

Mayweather is roughly half as good as Ali defensively, and 0% as good offensively. He may float a little like a butterfly, but he does not sting like a bee.

Skip to 3:53 for some crazy hand speed.

No I'm not comparing weight classes. I don't understand what you are trying to say. Some 145 lbers hit harder than other 145 lbers some have better / weaker chins too. Change the numbers to 230 in my last sentence and this still rings true.

What is your point?
