The internet is just so...unfuckingbelievable. To censor or tax it is just so...wrong. I don't really care one way or another with censoring, taxing or regulating alot of things that other people get all up in arms about...movies, tv, videogame...etc But leave my internet alone!!!
 
Well let's face it... Any rational person can realize that there are certain things that the "powers that be" won't allow you to get away with. For instance, I wouldn't suggest searching on Google for "How to make a dirty bomb" unless you were ready to have the FBI show up at your door. We all know big brother CAN watch us. Unless you're a relatively sophisticated individual and know how to mask your identity etc (shit that I have no idea how to do), there are certain aspects of the web that you probably want to not go near.

Also, lets not forget that right now the be-all end-all of the web is effectively Google. This is why the government has subpoenaed search engine records for certain court cases. I don't think its right, but odds are the government works closely with Google and other search engines (probably mostly in secret) to make sure that individuals "against the public good" are probably tracked and monitored.
 
The biggest arguments from cencoring the internet comes from larger companies who would benefit the most from it, they say that because so many people do nothing online other then search around that it wastes the bandwidth and those people should get a slower internet connection then say someone like Amazon, Ebay, Microsoft, Google, ect.. should.

Which is fucking bullshit from the get-go but like everyone else said if they try to cencor anything another country will pick up the slack or someone will say fuck this and hack the system for everyone.
 
Yes, they can. And they will if we don't stop this fearmongering terrorism madness.
 
Wikipedia, bloggers and blogspot are in the ban list in China. Google and CNN was banned for a period of time too. You know how Google is all about freedom of search and shit? Well even they had to bend over for China and comply with their filtering standards for Google china.

Your country's fiber optics and land lines are built using your tax dollars, by the GOVERNMENT. If they really want to, they can put a piece of paper inbetween the tubes and your access to the international www will be cut off. That's my hypothesis.

I think the goverment could possibly do it but on the other hand look what they could be losing in process of all the tax money they make off everthing
 
It's definitely possible through technology and fear, just look at China.

However, it WILL NOT happen in the US, in my opinion. Net Neutrality is the closest we have come, and ultimately that will be shot down.
 
Don't forget about online gambling. That's effectively been censored by that stupid fucking port act last year. So, yes, censorship can and does happen - but perhaps not directly ON the web. But if you cut off the ability to earn revenue from something, that's censorship.

yea, them banning online gambling fucked up some stuff for me, even though I don't gamble or promote gambling...

I've got an offshore account with some cash sitting it in that I can't use in the states now cuz the company got tied to gambling funds...

it's really pissing me off... money sitting there and I can't spend it :angryfire:
