I just opened a Scottrade account - what should I buy?

I'd seriously invest in that company that makes those little thingies that go in the thingamagig.

Glad to help.

You see, NN, where you went wrong is when you said you would take every response seriously.

Since you obviously make your living in tech, I'd recommend you look outside of the tech industry for diversification.

Usually, if you're just starting out with investing, try a few index and/or tracking funds. For instance, QQQ is a Nasdaq stock that replicates the performance of the Nasdaq market. So as the market rises and falls, so do you.

For what it's worth, this is a pretty piss poor time to get in to the markets full swing. There's just a lot of volatility. I'd suggest you dip your toe in a few no-load mutual funds, focusing on against-recession industries... Things like durable goods, discount retail, etc. Stay away from financials like the plague unless you feel like the bottom has already essentially hit.

Do your homework. The world of investing is hella fun, but a bad day will hurt like a kick in the balls.

With interest rates coming down and home equity lines less expensive, people might be doing more home improvement. You could do some research on companies like Home Depot or Black and Decker, and diversify away from tech, where you presumably make your money
JMHO

However, retail doesn't look horribly promising either right now - and that means "home depot" as well. I believe I just read that Lowes or Home Depot just reported a bad quarter or something like that. Since I don't give a rats ass I could have the store wrong, or even the facts.

Why not just go subscribe to the Motley Fool or a similar trade magazine?
