Can't find a decent pc laptop so I'm thinking of buying a MBP to put Windows on (bootcamp) as primary OS.

Using it for everything, office, web design, gaming. I keep hearing bad things about games and some older programs with Vista ... so I'm thinking XP.

Thoughts, experiences, caveats ...?

i like mac os x for work and xp for dinking around and games.

to me that would be a real waste of an awesome os called leopard.

Why Apple?
The only reason would be MacOS - the Hardware is actually much to expensive. Think about it.
Get some Dell Laptop

I'll probably take advantage of some of the ilife stuff once in a while but I like windows and I have a lot of win software.

A buddy of mine told me to go with Dell. I might take a look at them again. I just want solid hardware and some good specs ... Sony puts some decent packages together, but they underclock everything and they have to because they can't cool their laptops worth shit.

I just helped a buddy pick up a lappy and HP is always solid, Toshiba looked good too. Surprisingly Dell would have been my last choice.

And I would throw XP on it and get rid of vista. That's just me though.

Hey Rage,

They're a little lean on "power" ... Toshiba's are thicker than most laptops (better cooling) and I'd buy one in a heartbeat if they'd bump up the hardware specs (CPU + graphics card) in their 15.4"

I would not go with a Dell if you were thinking of doing that at all. I am still in school and most people go and get the dells becasue they are cheap but end up regretting it only a few short months later.
If you do get an apple put XP on it as I run vista and though it does have a few nice things about it for the most part it is more problems.
If you are not going to get an apple and want to get something that has a decent price but with a good amount of power and reliability I would shoot for a HP. They are amazing for the price.

I've had a few laptops by different manufacturers and I currently have an HP that I LOVE. It's a Pavilion DV900 and fabulous for any type of multimedia (plus it has a 17" screen that I LOVE, touch keys for certain functions and a few other bells and whistles). Now that's not to say it's for everyone, we all have our preferences and likes but I love it.

But I've used XP and Vista and I say XP. Vista is alright but I def prefer XP.

My two cents.

I've purchased dozens of laptops for people, and they are all crap unless you get a Sony, but Sony is too expensive.

So buy a dell.. Do a search for dell coupons, they got stuff all the time for 30% off $999+ Insperons and shit like that. If they don't have a good coupon this week, wait a week. I've gotten a bunch of desktops and laptops that way, and have saved a bundle.

For gaming i would love to have AlienWare !!! Fast for games and for performance

Seriously, if you're buying a laptop, stop and seriously consider what it's for.

Will you be using it as a primary computer, and using it as your dekstop when you get home? If so, then yeah, go hog wild...

But if it's just something to do some emails on, work a little on stuff that's basically data-entry or coding by any other name, maybe watch a movie, get yourself something small and light on features.
You really don't need much in the way of processing power to do ANY sort of office tasks on the go. Power is only required for heavy graphics processing or MASSIVE database usage (example: my Asus EEE can handle a DB of about 18,000 entries before it starts to noticeably slow down and it's only got 512mb of RAM on a 900MHz CPU). And if you're in a travel situation, like a train or a plane, you don't really need a large screen to watch a movie on either.
Screens massively add to the cost as well, after all.

Most peope I know need no laptop.
They get one, then have it sitting around on their desk at home.

If that is you, get a better desktop for about half the price and upgradeability.

If you are looking for something a little more customizable, look at Custom Laptops by PowerNotebooks.com™ - Discount Custom Notebooks & Cheap Laptop Computers . Their customer support is amazing, and for the price, you probably couldn't get much better. Back when there was no Duo 2 processor, I got my laptop 15.4", 2.16 Duo, Nvidia 256mb graphics, 2gbs ram, 100gb 7200rpm hd, and extras for less than $2000. That price isn't competitive now, but 2 years ago it was. The computer runs smooth still, and the only part that has fried is my LAN/Ethernet, that i just replaced with a card in my cardbus. Mmm hmm.

lol - I must be backwards ... I've only ever used laptops. I have been thinking about getting a desktop instead though.

Get the mac, man up, and use OS X. If you commit, You'll find you like it and wont go back. Keep windows on there for games, but if you're like me, you'll rarely use it.

Mac laptops are actually a great deal. I've been a Dell guy for years until I bought my first Macbook a few months back. The reason? It was cheaper for me to buy the Macbook than to spec out a similar 13" slim laptop from any other brand. I haven't really used the Mac part of things for a few months, but I use XP every day (mainly due to the new MS Office, which I prefer the Windows version to the Mac version). I originally put Vista on it, but I soon realized that Vista didn't do anything extra for me and just sucked up more resources. Leopard does give a bit better battery life than XP does on my MacBook, and performs all other functions just as well. I don't have multiple OS licenses of certain software such as Photoshop or Dreamweaver, so I can't test those out on both OSes.

Dell laptops are a pretty good deal, and their warranties are amazing, though you'll have to upgrade past the base batteries (adding weight) in order to get decent battery life. Macs are definitely the best priced laptops for those of their size (thinness included) and power, but you'll have to pay for an XP license.

ZSFA -- Why I Hate Apple, Why I Switched Back
have a look at this, quite interesting.

I actually don't want to say apple is bad, I just think I really would not get one to use Windows on it, because their hardware uses to be quite expensive.

That link is extremely retarded. First of all, it's extremely fucking old. Second, one of his main points is bitching about a better version coming out a month later. Waaaaaahhhhhh. Welcome to the wonderful world of computers, fuckhead.

Personally speaking, A friend of mine spent months trying to convince me to get a Mac. I finally did, and I've never been happier. I love my Macbook Pro more than my own mother. Best of all, it's built like a tank! I've had some extremely bad luck with this one and it's gotten knocked off a counter and my desk at work. I'm talking really hard falls here, falls that should have done some physical damage. It's still alive and kicking...thank God.

If you're going for a laptop, make it a Mac.
