I've been listening to Last.FM for a while but I can't listen to particular tracks there and anyways... I want to be able to download whatever I want.

So now I'm looking for something like iTunes but maybe better since I don't really like iTunes.

What is the best service out there to buy music downloads?

I use Grooveshark after having met one of the reps at Interop in Las Vegas. I don't know if it still requires invitations, but if anyone tries and it doesn't let them in, let me know because I have 5 invitations I can give out. The cool thing about it is that by sharing your music you can generate credits to download new stuff too, or you can listen to full songs on the site with their java player. If anyone needs an invitation, let me know.

mp3gle.com and mp3gle.net (different sites. .com is down a lot, but faster than .net when it is up)

Free mp3 downloads. If you're the type of person who feels bad when you download free music, then Amazon is good. DRM-free downloads there.

Ermm if you listen to my sites emusic is fantastic.
Never tried it though.
If you're looking for DRM-free MP3s, eMusic is great. More of an indie catalog, but they have a lot of indie rock and electronic music. It's pretty cheap per MP3 if you download your monthly allowance (it's something like $10/mo for 30 downloads?). I used to use it like crazy when it was $10/mo for unlimited downloads, but I guess users like myself made that unprofitable...

Amazonmp3 is pretty good for finding almost anything, as well.

Awsome, thanks for the tip!

I just got an account, great service.

you should try napster, it perfect for AF marketers that are at their computer all day.
$13 a month, to listen to all of the music you want, its awesome.

I've been using musicmp3.ru for a long time. They have a really large selection, you get some things earlier than street release, and it runs .08 - .15 a song. If I can't find it there I'll fire up Limewire.

They'll see WAY more money out of that than they would if you bought 10 of their CDs or downloaded their album 20 times over.

This is true. Most artists get paid a flat amount for given metric of performance, the label profits all of the proceeds.

On the other side, even if I am taking away from the 'profits' the artists, they still earn way more money than they are worth. I don't feel super guiltly pirating albums when you've got corrupt RIAA and overpayed millionaire music artists. Fuck them both.

aim: Well, there are some pretty big exceptions there... bands on smaller labels, or simply mid level bands for a start.
Would I buy a Metallica shirt? No... Mindless Self Indulgence? Probably... COG? Hell yeah!

My band makes enough money from shows to pay for gas or a few hours of studio time. Typically we lose money if we take a show outside of Vegas. We make most of our money from merch, and I think that's the way it is for most bands nowadays. Although, bigger bands do get to a point where they command a pretty hefty fee for a live set.

Once upon a time a band that "made it" got signed to a really lucrative contract with a big bonus up front. Now the labels literally give you a loan that has to be paid back so you can get off your feet, and bands make pennies per album sold. Could you imagine making oh, $50k for your platinum album?
