Got a wild hair and added GGR to my Netflix queue a while back; it finally showed up and as it turns out I love it just as much as always.

In case you need some marketing motivation, here's Alex Baldwin to give you a few pointers on selling.

YouTube - Glengarry Glen Ross speech

I honestly think that this movie was the best role for virtually every actor who was in it.

Eh, should have searched first ... just realised that this video is an old favourite around here. Still -- see the movie. It's a great flick.

I forgot I owned the DVD! The entire movie is great (I like most of Mamet's stuff). But, that speech just singed my eyebrows... again.

Frank, I took your advice and went out an bought GGR last night. I watched it.

Apart from the Baldwin speech, the movie is shit. I just don't get what the hype is about! Someone broke into an office. Big fuckin' deal.

I thought the actors played great parts. Alec Baldwin - fantastic. Kevin Spacey - good, not his greatest work. And Al Pacino, excellent as always, but there just wasn't a fucking plot at all...

Shit, I must be missing something. Someone please tell me WHY this is rated as such a great movie.

(And before anyone goes there, I didn't want action, fuckin' helicopters exploding etc... I just wanted a movie that didn't bore me to sleep).

I am going to go out on a limb and guess you've never worked a sales job? I can't think of many people with zero hard sales experience who enjoyed GGR ... maybe a few who like curse words and smartassery, but aside from that, there's say people like my wife, who watch GGR and say "What the fuck was that? Where are my two hours you asshole?" I get the impression you fall into that latter category, sorry the recommendation didn't work for ya.

From a career salesman's perspective: each of the characters represents a different "sales archetype." In that regard, each is played flawlessly, and it is in the characterisation -- not so much the plot -- that the movie hits the mark. Let's face it, take out explosions, aliens, virii and sexy chicks and there are only so many plot devices that can be deployed in a movie about a bunch of burnouts in a real estate office.

For me, it's the cadence of Mamet's dialogue. He comes from writing for the stage. There's a certain timing to his lines I've always loved. It's distinguishable. I remember when "Heist" opened, I heard a trailer from another room. I rushed in and said, "That's Mamet!" You can... tell.

It's the same with "The Spanish Prisoner," "House Of Games," "Spartan" and his other films.

So, I'm biased. Mamet could write a Lysol commercial and I'd love it. :)

You know, I didn't know the Spanish Prisoner and Spartan were the same director as GGR. Both hugely under-rated films.
