i was speechless too.
I'm really curious how google will spin this. Maybe they will get it right this time.
And I am sure WF wil be the first place to come up with ways to monetize this.
Too bad it does not have a Mac version yet.

Sounds like Webkinz for grownups. My kids love webkinz, creating rooms, interacting with each other. Sounds like someone realized how popular it was and thought there was a market for this with those older than 9.

Your first few posts are moderated. It's a common mistake. However, I suspect you may be flamed nonetheless!
This is nothing new they have had this around for a few years, in talks, ect... the only thing that Google will be able to do better then the others in this early stage of launch (And by early I mean years not days or weeks) is to handle the graphics and lag times much more effectively.
As for this being like SecondLife, well its not even close to being anything like second life, its basically you create your own room and have friends come over (Almost everything is pre-determined) and chat as you would in a chat room or forum oh and shit like YouTube videos, again nothing special.
The real question is does Google have the potential to make something special like SecondLife? The answer is a big yes but will they is an entirely different discussion

As a sidenote I think what would be really cool to see is a real browser like FireFox being able to impliment seemless integration into these 3D words so for instance keep the web as it is in the standard 2D sense but if you wanted to enter second life you wouldn't leave your browser everything would just turn into a 3D experince with avatars, ect...

I used to spend a lot of time on Second Life, but my computer's dusty old video card couldn't keep up with the updates. I still have a bunch of Lindens sitting in my account...and some in a Second Life stock market!

Did you ever play around with VRML in Netscape?
Stuff like Blaxxun's cybertown? Being that VRML was effectively a graphic extension of HTML (provided you had the plugin to read the object markups), the integration was fairly seamless, but the other way around.
Your avatar would browse websites inside the world's engine...
Actually, on a 17" 800x600 monitor, it made it really hard to view the sites at times
I'm hoping that Google actually moves in that direction with this.
You have a unified world that people can interact in on a macro-level, but individual spaces (cybertownhouses) on people's websites for micro-level interaction that's got the semi-privacy of having to go to the hosting website to visit.
With an attitude like that, I think you're going to make it here juuuust fine
