1. when i boot up it automatically runs windows. How can i change it to boot OS X on boot up?

2. When in windows, my exterior mac monitor doesnt work, also trackpad doesnt work when i tap to click. How can i make the mac hardware work with windows?

3. what's the best way to run both mac and windows at the same time?

are you using bootcamp?

1. Hold the apple key down before you turn on the power.. it will let you choose windows/macosx

2. Right click on desktop >> properties >> activate your other monitor.... if its not there make sure you have the right video card drivers installed

I'm using bootcamp.

Ya, i know how to choose windows vs mac os x. But if i dont do that now, it defaults to windows. Can i make it default to os x?

Keep in mind depending on the mac you have, you may have to do some work to get Vista x64 to work, and even more so if you're trying to get everything to work in XP x64.

i have new macbook pro, came with bootcamp. Already have XP installed

If it's not the x64 bit version of XP then you should be able to simply pop in your leopard disc, navigate to the bootcamp folder, and double click setup.

Once that is done, reboot, then run the apple software update to get the latest 2.1 version of the boot camp drivers. From there everything should work as well as the keyboard buttons for sound and eject and such.

Keep in mind however without Vista x64 (or if you manage to manually install the drivers for XP x64) if you get the Macbook pro up to 4GB (or unofficially 6GB), your 32bit windows installation won't see more than about 3.5GB of that memory.
 
Oh and VmWare Fusion is also quite handy, you can boot off your bootcamp partition while still inOSX and use your window in a virtual screen. Or you can install a copy of windows onto it's own virtual machine without needing boot camp at all. (Course if you wish to play games or anything that needs more power, its best to reboot into windows).
 
seconded - unless gaming or some other purpose where I need the dedicated hardware - I run windows in a VM - runs quite good on a well equipped mac laptop

2. To set up the external monitor, right click on your XP destop, click properties (not graphic properties), and go to the settings tab. Then, click on the "2" monitor, and click "Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor. You can also specify its position in relation to your laptop monitor. In terms of tapping to click, the Macbook that I have (bought last December) does not support tapping to click in Windows, though this does work if you run Windows inside the Mac environment, using something like VMWare fusion.

3. I'm using VMWare Fusion to run XP within Mac OS. The only downside is that I can't seem to get my XP part to work on my external monitor, though display properties sees the external monitor (currently Mac OS appears there).As of April, VMWare was aware of the demand to make this work, but I don't think it's been implemented yet. Parallels is another option, but I don't know anything about it. For me, I have a 19" additional monitor for my Macbook and a 24" for my desktop, so it hasn't really been an issue yet.
