We should have a contest

It is hard to say no additional spend, but how about judging based on %age ROI? So someone could spend $10k but must make $100k to equal someone who spends $10 and makes $100? With all inc/exp accounted for. That should encourage people to keep spending to a minimum.

I like this idea.

As for sidebar links, suggest some others.

As for requiring them to disclose before Jan 1st, I was going to leave registration open during the whole contest, although this would obviously give people who started early an advantage.

I updated the rules page:

You may spend money to promote your site, develop content, etc, but you must report your total spend at the end of the contest. Your eligibility for prizes will be determined by the ratio of how much money you spent to how much you received from the sale. In other words, if person A spends $100 and sells his site for $500, and person B spends $1,000 and sells his site for $3,000, person A will win.

Just off the top of my head, a couple of good non-wf related sites. Eli or Nicky don't need any more advantage than they already have!

I was suggesting register any time in Jan, but instead maybe keep it open but say peeps have to register within x days of registering the domain? (So no-one can start in Jan but not disclose their site until the end of march.)

get a $0.99 cent domain and be way ahead everyone else by a magnitude of 7-8! you're making it more difficult than it needs to be. ;) winner should be determined by the final sale price period.

any revenue the site makes during the contest should be considered spiff for the site owner to either reinvest in the site or keep. final sale price gets donated to charity.

another thought... get a box donated and all sites need to be hosted on that box - it's a perk AND it helps with the final sale of sites.

I agree with everything you've said.

The problem is, there's no way that I can think of that'll make this contest fair for the guy that only has $10 to spend when there are guys that can spend thousands on outsourced content, custom templates, etc.

Good point... how much are .cn's? About $0.20? (Although an $8 .com will nearly always outsell a cheaper .info/.cn/whatever) I'm just throwing ideas out there at the mo... What better ways are there to allow people to spend, but keep it fair? Spending cap as someone suggested? Deduct exp from sale price?

that goes to my point above... it's all for charity so if someone dumps a bunch of money in on their site - so what. life's not fair and this challenge doesn't have to live up to some other standard. kids win regardless (charity) - there are no losers. what does the guy get who can't afford to promote his site or buy content or whatever ... jack - other than the opportunity to work on a site, get some guidance, have some motivation - i see this as a DO IT FUCKING NOW pt II type thing for that guy. win / win / win!!!

but don't let me discourage you... if you come up w/ a formula - great. i just think you're overthinking this part of it ;)

Made another edit:

As an addendum to the above rule, this contest assumes a baseline of $10. Go ahead and register your $0.99 .cn, but it won't count.

Also put a note at the top that says the rules aren't finalized.

Well, if the only prize was a pedegg, yeah, that would work. Problem is, one of the prizes is 10% of the total revenue of the site sales. Mr. Brokeass newbie isn't going to want to even enter if he knows he's not going to win.

Yes, the learning experience is valuable, but some people want immediate returns.

Deduct exp from sale price?

I considered that, but here's the problem:

  • If someone manages to sell a site for $10,000 after investing $5,000, hey, that's great.
  • If someone manages to sell a site for $1,000 after investing only $10, that's really fucking impressive.

Who should be rewarded in the above scenario? I'd say the second one.

Yeah, I agree, that's why I suggested the %age thing, but Radio has a point about not over-complicating it. I'm not sure the best way to go.

i'm going to leave this to you... but you're not raising the floor, you're only bringing down the ceiling. there is no motivation for someone to spend anything on their site since $1000 invested for $3000 sale = 3:1 vs $100 invested vs $500 sale = 5:1 AND nets 10% of the $3000 sale! So instead of perhaps one big player swooping in and selling high (raising the most for charity) - you've relegated everyone to $10 sites (reinforced by the returns above) and the overall sale of those is going to be considerably less.

finally, it's a freakin' honor system - so you'll never know anyways. if you can't manage it, you can't measure it. the only known in this whole thing will be the final sale price.

hope that's clear...

oh, and 1st place now gets a pedegg.

Yeah, I considered that too. Basically, I've got to find a happy medium.

Is this a case study first and a charity drive second? Or the other way around?

Alright, I thought about it for a bit and decided that this should be a case study first, charity second. Basically, I want to see who can do the most with the least. The fact that a charity will benefit is just a byproduct of the experiment.

Or rather, maybe I should break the contest into two parts: Those who don't want to spend any more than $10, and those who want to spend whatever.

Thoughts?

Alright, I broke it into two groups as stated in my last post. Back to the simple rules: Whoever's site sells for the most, wins.
