Or, you know, it is science. Piracetam has been around since the 60s, it's been well-studied and peer reviewed, and it has a proven mechanism of action. It's not just some shit berry from the Amazon.
I'm sorry, maybe you're a neurologist. Please, enlighten me.
I'm no neurologist, and you can believe whatever you like. However I'm one heck of skeptical individual and I research the hell out of anything before diving into it. Here's a few facts,
It's Precious
-Your brain as it is, has more potential synapse connections than matter in the universe.
No One Knows
-Not one human being on this planet understands the human brain, not even CLOSE.
-Not one doctor in the world can give you PILL X and say you will have X result with absolute certainty.
-Neurologists are still debating over which region in the brain does what, these constant "discoveries" lead me to believe that no one knows what the fuck is going on.
Repercussions
-No one is immune to brain disorders
-Some drugs induce permanent changes in the brain
-These haven't been around long enough to know the real effects are
-There's no replacement brain
Peer-reviewed journals? I only believe in peer-reviewed journals that benefit
no one. As a marketer you know damn well those companies are funding "scientific studies" to get good results. When they don't give them? They pull the funding from all their other pretty projects. I'm not saying this is the case with a product that seems relatively under the radar. Be your own judge.
First, I do actually require it. Anyone whose been in a room for me 10 minutes when I had none that morning knows what I mean.
But I see no problem with altering your brain chemistry so long as you're prepared for the risks. There's a lot to be said for push button emotions and feelings.
And as an aside point, while humans didn't evolve taking pills all day, they definitely altered their brain chemistry a LOT. Hallucinogens, etc.
- If you have a condition, and you've found something that fixes it, good job! As I said previously, there's no problem with this as long as the user understands the risks. I personally know a few people that went through pill after pill with doctors to try and fix X problem only to have more and more problems crop up as treatment went along, was adjusted, or dropped for other pills. It can become a living nightmare that's 20 times worse than the original problem.
- It's true that humans have been altering their brains with hallucinogens for a long while (thousands of years), I'm not exactly sure if you're trying to say it's justified now because they did it before? Humans have been chewing on cocoa leaves for a while too.
My reply is the same when people ask my why I smoke: life is more interesting as a smoker, and makes me generally more happy. I accept that I'm causing my memory to get worse and worse (which is yet another reason to take nootropics) and I don't give a flying shit.
And many nootropics are just herbs that aren't addictive or require you to keep taking them. Then again, I'm not a neurologist.
- Something doesn't have to be addictive for it to be bad for you.
- Life sure is more interesting as a smoker, I'm no drug nazi. I'm just a drug nazi to drugs that are being pushed by people who want you to buy them.
It all comes down to what XMCP said, it's the user's bottom line on willingness to take X risk to gain Y effect. It just saddens me that you guys with, presumably perfectly normal brains are considering using a product that could have serious side effects down the road. Just be safe, and if you never needed it until you were sold into it, you don't need it.
So after all is said and done, that little lump of goo in your skull is the most complicated, useful, and precious piece of machinery you've ever had or will ever have. If you're willing to throw things into it for a measly extra temporary brain power, have fun! I hope your brain is still as good as you want it to be when your 80.
